New Super7 ReAction photos...Predator, Terminator, more...

Funko has released images for many of their new 3.75

I have to say...I'm not too terribly impressed by any of these. The Alien figures looked like Kenner figures because they WERE Kenner figures. These...not so much. Something has been lost in the translation. It's almost like the sculptor tried to go TOO soft on the details...too simplistic. Even the old Kenner Star Wars aliens/creatures were closer to their screen appearance than those Predators are.

ZICA got their SMDM figures just right. While simple, the sculpt of Steve Austin is clearly Lee Majors. Those Terminator figures look NOTHING even remotely like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

If the final figures look like this, I'm afraid I'll be passing on them all.

Yeah, I have to admit I'm somewhat less excited about these now that I've seen the first pics. I'm not really seeing Kurt Russel in that Snake Plissken figure at all. Or Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator. The Nightmare Before Christmas figures look good... I guess because they are cartoons to begin with. Still, a lot of them say "subject to final licensor approval," so hopefully there is room for improvement before they come out.

Repeat after me, Funko: Retro Style does NOT mean "Animated Style".

Agree with Dwayne. Zica got it right. Look at ZICa's Steve Austin. There's a subtlety in that face that NAILS the old Kenner look. It does not look like a figure based on a 6MDM animated series... It has those perfectly painted eyes, the slightly boxy shaped neck.

Look at the Super7 Alien and Kane figures, based on original 1979 sculpts. Nothing there is softened. The detail is incredible, not softened at all. And yet, the vintage vibe is preserved. What Funko is offering looks more like a 1990s style animated series figure line.

      Having said all of that....

These are prototypes, and hopefully will improve.

I will be picking some of these up. I'm a huge Rocketeer fan, so that's a must. And still, I like the concept behind this line. The price is reasonable, and if some of them go clearance, which I think they will, I wil then be populating my Star Wars cantina with some more of these cartoony oddballs.

The figure that most has "the look" is Sarah Connor. I also like that the chromed Endoskeleton is sort of a callback to Death Star Droid and the vac-metalized C-3PO.

Here's hoping there are still lots of juicy licenses left over for ZICA, because those guys get it.

Oh, and someone please make Creepshow fer cryin' out loud!

I agree with you Hedji, Sarah Connor is probably the closest to an old Kenner figure.
Honestly, I could even do without the removeable helmet on Rocketeer. It's too oversized...and for what? To show off a headsculpt that looks nothing like Bill Campbell.
I'd rather they sculpt the head with helmet on.

Wow those all look pretty bad. Look like someone's attempt at making custom one off figures than a production run.

I'm beginning to think that there is a correlation between "retro style" and "not having the likeness rights" to some of these characters.

I've already ordered the monsters though, I like monsters, I like 3 3/4", call me Patzy. Actually don't, that's my mother's name.

These are only prototypes and they're trying to get a lot done in a small space but I'm friendly with the person who brought the Alien concept to life and his passion spoke volumes. It's not as apparent with round 2 thus far, fingers crossed....

Boy I hate being right sometimes... I called this one right after FUNKO took the helm. I had, and still do have, high hopes for this, but it's not looking good. The human sculpts are just too generic, and if you layed them out loose on a table I doubt many folks would know wh they are. That's how you know you missed the mark. There is is such a fine line between simple (retro) and plain ole generic. You can capture a simple charm without giving up recognizability, it's hard you have to work at it and you have to be able to convey it to the sculptor. Think 12 back Luke Versus POTF Aniiken, Kenner got better over time.

But like I predicted, FUNKO has taken the coolness of re-producing unproduced proto-types and reduced it to a schtick... On top of that they phoned it in on the sculpts... It makes me think they just didn't "get it", and have already rushed to over produce... I am fatigued before they hit the market.

The $9.99 MSRP, tells me they are trying to run every other potential maker out of the game, which means most companies won't try to compete, or if they do? for good figures in this scale you'll have to pay more.

Bright Spots? The Packaging is quite good, I dig the very KENNER style packaging. I also didn't know that Nightmare Before Christmas was on the list (musta missed it amongnst the virtual roll call of properties), that looks nice and while it doesn't translate 100% folks are gonna eat that up.... NMBC has a huge following.

That's just my $.02 and I am not bashing the efforts, because nobody was more excited than me for these figures.

              Dave

I wonder if the sculptor of these is an under-40 person, who didn't grow up with vintage Star Wars, but instead is interpreting the aesthetic. These have a real 1990s Animated figure vibe to them which is disappointing.

If they didn't have likeness rights to Kurt Russell or Arnold, would they be able to use them on the card art? To me it looks like overthinking the 70's Kenner asthetic.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you guys this time. When I got my first look at these figures Friday evening I began to slowly lose heart as I scrolled down the page. These are truly lacking the vintage charm of the Alien and Zica SMDM figures in this style. I was super excited when I first heard the news about all the great licenses being made into 3 3/4 retro figures but now... not so much. Unless they greatly improve I will pass on all of them. Judging from most of the comments here if I were Funko/Super 7 I would quickly go back to the drawing board. Otherwise these lines are doomed before they get started good.

The only ones that interest me are Nightmare Before Christmas and Universal Monsters. The prototypes shown are obviously very early. So, I think they look fine. Predator is of very low interest to me but I do think they nailed the early Kenner SW cantina child friendly cuteness with the various Predators.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
