In regards to SpaceBalls, I recently read an interview with Mel Brooks (in toyfare of all places) where he said he couldnt merchandise the movie due to an agreement with Lucasfilm, in exchange for the right to use Star Wars as the basis for the films storyline. He did mention that he could always approach George Lucas about Lucasfilm handling the merchandising though?
In the case of Rocketeer, I was told some time ago by friends of mine in the comic biz who knew Dave Stevens quite well, that it was very difficult to merchandise anything for this film. Disney produced it, and as such had the licensing rights for film merchandise. For toys, they had a right of first refusal deal with Mattel at the time, and apparently Mattel tied it up for too long, trying to make up their minds. End result was it was too late to shop it around to anyone else who could make figures in time for the films release. Obviously, whomever made the bendie (Lakeside?) decided they had time and had their figures on the pegs in time for the release. Sadly the film did poorly, meaning nobody would have any interest in doing figures after.
Mr. Stevens wanted toys...and much more. Ended up with a crummy deal for the film rights, and not much else to show for it.
Perhaps, its time to revisit the property, film and merchandising wise?
