          Why I collect Mego?

Because they were my favorite toys when I was a child. They remind me of summer days in the 70s, with my best friend Brian, thinking up adventures for our Mego heroes. A simpler time, when a picnic table could be a fort and a great backdrop for Megos.

I didn't have many (although I always begged for more) 5 WGSH, 2 POTA, 3 Mad Monsters, but they all were well loved. As I got older, other childhood toys were sold or given away, but not my Megos. Those I packed away and saved. In fact my favorite, Spiderman, remained on my bedroom shelf and has never been packed away.

A few years ago, I decided it was time to try to repair my T1 Aquaman, I did a search on-line and found the Mego Museum. I found out that there were Mego lines that I never knew of and I "met" some really great people that shared my love for these great toys. I couldn't believe how many cool Megos were out there. I still have my original 10 Megos -- which are the center pieces of my collection, but I have added at least 150 Megos to my collection. The joy of getting a new Mego in the mail is indescribable to anyone that doesn't have the Mego love, but to us in the know it is priceless.

Sometimes, I sit and just look at my collection. It never fails to put me in a peaceful state and brings a smile to my face. So, that is why I collect Megos.

I collect Megos because 30+ years ago I helped a few astronauts escape from the Apes, the crew of the Enterprise stop the Klingons, the Worlds Greatest Super Heroes save the day, and after all of these years every one of these childhood friends is still with me, some fell in battle and have been repaired with tape or new elastic string, some look as good as new, but I could never leave any behind.

I collect Megos because of this guy. When I was given a 3D version of him as a kid, it was love at first sight. I could love him, and kiss him, and squeeze him...

Because they make summer a little bit longer, cereal a little more sugary amd me a little bit less older.

                  Why I collect Megos.

I collect them for many reasons. They were my favorite toy as a kid and when I first got my computer, my brother told me about this site. This site plus ebay equalled the perfect storm for me. Also, I have always loved the concept of Marvel and DC together and I think that and my two boys are what keep me going on customs. Recently, Benjamin's book helped fuel my fire to expand my interest to vehicles and the Tenn Titans. I could go on, but I won't.

Sometimes I wonder why I collect Megos.

Originally (In the 70's) it was because I loved the characters and wanted to have some to relive stories and create new ones. There wasn't really any choice as to which figures I would collect - It was 8" mego or nothing until the 12 and 3 3/4 guys came out. Then 12 inchers were too expensive and even though I bought a few little guys, the 8 inchers were way cooler and I already had a start on a collection.
It was the reruns of Batman with Adam West, Superfriends, Wonder Woman, SHAZAM and Isis and Electric Co. Spidey that caught my attention most on TV and in the Comics I read Justice League, Aquaman, Daredevil, Batman and Spider-man (and many others). I wanted to get characters I knew well - I never did find Daredevil or Wonder Woman. Of course I learned later there never was a DD and 8 inch WW was discontinued about the same time I started collecting. I managed to grab 13 of 'em.

I am having a hard time locating my Childhood Mego pics. I'll upload if I find one.

Why did I stop collecting? By 7th grade most guys were either quitting superheroes/action figures or denying their love (my case). I turned to other interests for the next decade. I improperly stored my comics and figures (though they made the time trip fairly well anyway).

Why do I collect now? In 89 Batman (movie) made Superheros OK for the masses again. I went opening week at the promping of friends who did not know my hidden love for the Genre. My Mego collection came out of storage and placed on a shelf in my rented college house. A vintage toy store opened near me and my wife bought a lando calrissian skiff guard. So the Star Wars stuff came out too. Both were modest displays.
At a college party my Mego Joker was destroyed and Conan stolen. I bought a new Joker at the vintage toy store. I was still in GEEK DENIAL. The collections remained small and discretely displayed.

It was when I went to the opening of Star Trek VI on opening night and noted out loud the number of Geeks in line to see this movie when it dawned on me...I was getting in line. I came home, announced my geekhood to my girlfriend (now wife) and the world and to the day I embrace the fact that -yes, I am a geek. A functional geek - but a geek nonetheless.

In 92 the Batman series started on TV and X-Men followed and Spider-man and Toy Biz was putting out tons of figures. I bought a few things. Then a few more, then I joined ebay and started buying more. Then I bought a house and displayed stuff in every room. When I got married the collection was mostly consolidated to one room in which I built shelves from floor to ceiling all the way around the room. It house all but my 10 inch toy biz marvel who had a massive display in the basement. Many more things were in boxes. I displayed loose but retained all packaging making for a lot of junk.
One corner (not even a 10th of my collection):

Why did that happen? I LOVE TOYS! But it was out of controll and I thingk I liked collecting more than the toys themselves. In 2000 the weeding out process began. From the beginning it was clear tha Mego would NOT be pared down. It was the only line allowed to grow. In the past 8 years I went from 3000 action figures including 25 Megos to Less than 200 action figures on display including over 150 megos / megolike. I still have 100s in tubs in the basement - but they are still getting thinned out.

Me and my daughter playing "Guys"

Why do I love the Megos - in the 70s I had no choice - now with plenty of choices these are the coolest action figures ever made. The are playable (holdable and poseable). They look great. The have a uniqueness, the are nostalgic. I still love superheroes - and the longer I have been out of the Geek closet the more I find out about the Geek in everyone I meet. Believe me when I say this that I mean it with all the affection in the world..Never will you find a more awesome hive of Geeks and Dorks than here in the Mego Museum - so of course that has helped fuel my Mego lust.

because the Mego Corp. covered so many genres with there great toys. Super Heroes, movie properties (i.e Moonraker, Wizard Of Oz,ST:TMP), TV shows (i.e. CHiPS, Love Boat, Buck Rogers, Star Trek, The Little Racals, The Waltons(okay, bad example ), music (i.e. Cher, KISS, Captain & Tennile), classic chracters (Western, Robin Hood, Knights) as well as there own creations (Clown Around, Action Jackson, Eagle Force). They made great toys for boys and girls. Board games and educational toys. It's really hard to top the Mego Corp. when you consider all of those things. Of all the toys my dad bought me as a kid, the only ones that sticks out in his head are the WGSH toys when he sees my collection. That speaks volumes to me!

Why I collect mego? I collect mego because as a kid growing up on the farm never really had a chance to get all those cool toys the other kids were getting when I was young. Summer vacation was basically work duty and the weekends were spraying days out on the farm. My older brothers had the remnants of the kiss dolls in there rooms on display and were handed down to me to do with as I please. What little time I could get to play with them I did and mom handed down her expertise in sewing skills so I could make the clothes to the kiss dolls that they were missing. So in short as an kid didnt have time really for toys and making up for it as a adult and mego offered the best toys with real cloth outfits that I could add to with my sewing abilities.

Oh gosh, sorry. I meant to post this under what I did with my summer vacation.

                                Why I collect Mego....

to explain my pictures... I collect Mego because I have always loved toys and when I was younger I collected toys randomly what ever caught me at the moment and I also collected comics and when collecting comics I kept running into "first appearance" and I thought how come people don't make a big deal out of the first appearance of a character in toy form and so I started looking into it and I got the super powers and secret wars lines and then I looked back further and found Mego and it was love at first sight. my first Mego was Spider-Man Followed Quickly by Hulk then I was like what about DC? then Superman and Batman ended up on my shelf then I needed robin then I needed villains then I needed everything! As of just this morning with the addition of an Isis head from "Captact", a member here, I now have (in some state of being built) every one of the WGSH (save for the titans) That picture is just one of my favorite adds and I am going to attempt a recreation in honer of it this Halloween at my comic book shop as our window display but I will use the Mego monsters since I don't have the others.
