    Mego

    Why I Collect Mego
It started years ago when my father would purchase these for me. I would have hours of fun with these figures. I loved them so much. Sometimes I would leave them outside and my father would find them and put them away for me. I would cry for them and he would then give them to me and tell not to cry anymore. So I collect mego because of all of the wonderful memories I had a child with them and also because they remind me of my dad and how much he loved me and how much he knew that I loved my megos. RIP Dad. I will continue to keep mego alive in my children and hopefully they will do the same.

      Great thread Brian!

      "WHY I COLLECT MEGO"

I collect Mego because I was obsessed with the figures l since I was a kid and LITERALLY had frequent dreams at night about obtaining a full set of loose Megos. This pic is almost 20 years old now but this was my first complete collection and epitomizes that dreams do come true. It is the main reason I have graduated to carded figures today...to fulfill that dream as best as I can.

Why I collect Mego...because when I was ten years old no one would ever buy them for me when I asked because they were "too dear" (expensive). So now I buy them for myself...and they are still "too dear" sometimes!

Because they make me very Happy and in the end thats all that really matters.

One of the most Happiest times in my life was when I was a kid. I was lucky enough to have some MEGOs. I remembered the feeling of joy that overwhelmed me when I had a brand new one to play with. I decided I wanted to have that same feeling again. So I decided to start my collection of MEGOs. Now I get that Happy feeling everytime I receive a package in the mail or look at my collection. I LOVE MEGOs. There Awesome.

                Why I collect Mego?

When I walk into my office, this portion of my collection is the first thing I see (well, basically. The pic is a bit old and needs updating):

It always instantly puts a smile on my face, no matter what kind of mood I'm in. I'm transported back to a simpler time when I was a kid who loved playing with these toys above any other. This is the closest thing I have to a time machine that takes me back to my childhood, so I cherish each one of these silly little "dollies". It melts away the years as well as any stress I may have. To me, that makes them worth every penny.

                  Because Megos are cool

What else is there than the Mego Museum and an 8" plastic action figure like a Mego could act as a time machine and take you back to a time when you were just a kid having fun with no real worries in the world. Parents were superheroes for having bought you one and then you too could play like a superhero!

                      Why??
Because I would race home after school, just to play with them.
Because I would take one to bed to protect me from evil things.
Now I have still have them even though it's juvenile.
Because they remind me of being a kid, with not a care in the world, and plenty of time.
                      Because they kick ***!!
Because I can't say anything that Newforces picture of his kid doesn't sum up by itself.

Because I really want that bowl of Tomato soup, boy am I hungry.

Oh, and because a couple years ago when I started up again with my old original megos, I lived in Rock Springs Wyoming, which is officially the Anus of the Universe, and I needed something to keep me Sane.

                            Why I collect Mego:

I've often thought about why I spend so much time and energy on these plastic pieces of history. I never had many as a kid, only 14 (11 WGSH and 3 Apes)and the Batmobile. No other accessories or playsets. So why do I love them so? Because like most of us they take you back to a time when I didn't have a care in the world.

As most people know my Dad was in the Air Force when I was growing up, so of course we moved a LOT. Seems we'd get settled somewhere and then, bang, I'd move away, leaving friends behind. I envied people who had classmates they knew since first grade. Anyway, when I would arrive at our new Air Base I'd take my megos and go sit outside and start playing. Sure enough, some kid would walk by and ask "What'ch doing?". He'd see what I had and get excited and say "Hey, I've got Superman and Aquaman. Let me go get them". Then we'd start playing and become the best of friends. Until I moved again...

In it's simplist form the same thing happended here. I had Megos and met someone who had them, who knew someone else who had them. We started talking and bang - you've all become my new friends.

Why I collect Mego becomes obvious to those who get inside my brain and cuddle under some of my igneous rock and roll nuttiness, for it is there that I have left a little trail of breadcrumbs back to my own Hansel and Gretel land of edible homes and scary witchy women (with apologies to The Eagles) and many other things that frighten, titillate, bewilder and mostly cause me to laugh in order to smooth it all over with a nice coat of polyurethane.

                              It kinda goes like this:
My family comes from WWII, Jews on the run. My grandpa told me hundreds of stories of his heroics and all the insanity of what he witnessed. History and its relevance to the present moment was a sensibility I developed early on. Just as I collected my grandpa's stories and wisdom, I began to collect other things in childhood--heroes, baseball, comics and weird things from 1960s and 1970s, oh yeah! them's was good days!

Add to this my mother (daughter of the Holocaust) with her neuroses and constant reorganization of my stuff, she would put me and my brother's toys out at garage sales and hope we wouldn't notice! Many mornings were spent frantically grabbing my collection back from grubby yard salers' hands.

Keep going: my own propensity to retreat to inner worlds and make up new places and ideas was fueled by the toys I had or wanted or made. I got further and further into a place that only I could go with my toys and my abstract nonsense and joy.

Then, it just looked so darned cool to see all my things together, that I spend hours every night in my room as a kid playing with and reorganizing my collection to reflect my latest acqusitions or changes in taste.

And from there, I just really never stopped. Megos were a smaller part of it back then, and are a HUUUUUGE part of it now. I also have long-term obsessions with Wacky Packs, Toy Trains, Whitman Paper Dolls, Los Angeles Dodgers trading cards, Little People, old comics, and the list goes on.
