High Quality Mego Commercial Reels discovered!

High Quality Mego Commercial Reels discovered!
    by palitoy • January 7, 2016

Thanks to an amazing contribution from former PAC Toys president Joe Ruzzi, we’ve got new higher resolution copies of over 50 Mego TV commercials and toy fair sizzle reels. We’ll be encoding them and sharing one every week in the Mego Museum Newsletter.

A round of applause has to go to AcroRay’s Laboratory for donating his time and doing an incredible job of helping transfer these for us.

We begin with a classic, the Mego Superhero contest, just look at those shelves laden with Micronauts, World’s Greatest Superheroes, Speed Burners and even 12″ Wonder Woman figures!

It’s so nice to see these in higher quality and sound!

Awesome, second row far left is that an orange card? Conan or Penguin perhaps?

I've seen this ad before. This copy looks a lot better.

        Those vintage toy shelves!

So far, none of these are new but they are ten times better than the copies floating around. I could never make out the stuff on the shelves before and the sound!

It's weird hearing it with great sound - instead of sound like watching an old classroom movie on the movie projector.

Pictures are great but for me it's the sound that's really amazing.

                        That's super cool.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

This is absolutely breath-taking. Thank you for sharing!

                          A couple observations:

First, this video would be from 1980, not 1979. This "Super-Heroes" Free Poster/Sweepstakes was a 1980 marketing effort, announced with Mego's 1980 Toy Fair catalog. (Additionally, an "Elastic Heroes" Plastic Man is visible on the shelves; Elastic Spider-Man, Superman and Batman were offered in 1979, but Mego didn't add Plastic Man until their 1980 offering.)

                          Marvel vs. DC
It seems clear that Mego went to some trouble to promote DC products, alone, in this spot. Surely this was in response to the rival companies' insistence their products not be promoted together. So it's likely Mego opted to choose one license over the other, and Mego DC characters well outsold their Marvel offering (with the exception of Spider-Man and Hulk).

In reality, this Free Poster/Sweepstakes actually offered BOTH a DC and a Marvel poster, and the promise of combined DC/Marvel Figure assortments. The actual pre-packed displays would have included 48 DC and 48 Marvel WGSH toys. However, the pre-packed display in this spot is loaded with DC toys ONLY. In fact, the entire spot depicts ONLY DC toys…

                          …well, ALMOST all DC toys:

Looking carefully during the opening shot of the kid shoveling toys into his cart, the observant Collector will spy both an 8" carded Conan as well as a 12" Hulk. I would love to know if the subtle inclusion of merely two Marvel toys was an oversight, or intentional placement. Knowing Mego and their sense of humor, I strongly suspect the latter.
