THAT IS THE MOST AMAZING THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!
You guys made my year with this one. Phenomenal. I would have killed for this one...even with the crows nest/french fry basket sick bay. Amazing.....Stupendous...Colossal.........cool even!!
What I find most interesting is all this Trek stuff was discussed in 1977. During the summer/fall of 77', Paramount had green lit the soon to be aborted Phase II tv series. Mego obviously would know about this, and I'm betting a lot of the product discussion may have been generated by an attempt to build the Trek license up to capitalize on the "sure thing" sales a newly announced Trek series would have brought at the time.
Does anyone know the EXACT timing on the presentation of these? If it was late enough in 77 that they missed the 78 toy fair, its very probable that lack of retailer interest didnt quash them, but rather the switch from a tv show to a film caused Mego to stick them on the backburner for a year. When the movie line fizzled, so did this stuff.
I'm also intrigued by the Comic Action Hero comment. We need to follow up on that somehow!? Were there prototypes made? or by the time the talking turned into action, was the movie far enough along that the TMP figures were the only 3 3/4" figures done. I know I have brought this up before, and I've pestered everyone I can think of who has ties to old Mego staff to inquire further on the matter (sorry guys!)....Back when Star Trek II came out, Entertainment Tonight did a retrospective on Star Trek, along with a sneak peek of the movie, and a story on merchandising. During the merchandising story, they had a splash pic of Trek merchandise, and ...I will never forget this...in the bottom right hand corner was a carded 3 3/4" Scotty figure in a red tunic and pants. I've always assumed (although been told it was not the case) that Mego had a planned Trek II line of figures coming out, but in light of this revelation, its entirely possible that figure was a carded CAH original series/Phase II prototype!!??
Man, I'm wired now!!!!!
