Wow. Color me impressed. It's amazing how far the prototypes have come in a years time. I can tell you the biggest step up is the head sculpting. These just translate so much better now that it seems the emphasis is diminished for 70's animated kiddie heads.
Flash - Perfect. I can't imagine that one looking any better a this point in production. In fact, the proto looks like a peg-ready figure already.
Shazam - I love the head. It has a charm to it and remains faithful to CC Bech's vision. They'll have to re-tool the boots and emblem, but they really captured the essence of the character.
Black adam - I know pretty much everyone hates this guy, but he's just about my favorite comics villain, and this figure does him justice. The sculpt really channels the initial appearances of him especially in the Superman vs. Shazam Treasury Edition. I'm up in the air regarding gold vs. yellow gear, but I'll take either.
Darkseid - Very interesting choice. I think this makes a statement that they are getting away from the initial concept of 70's retro and embracing contemporary characters which will extend the life of the line big-time.
Guy Gardner - Awesome. They manganed to sculpt a head that has both a throwback quality and still show attitude. I have no idea how that suit will work in produciton, but what a neat choice.
Captain Cold - Looks great. Can't say I like the character, and the fact he's been a two-year peg warmer in the DCUC isn't a good sign, but well done in any case.
Modern Sinestro - I dig it. Mattel is already pulling a Mego by re-using heads. Smart business decision and great looking figure.
WOnder Woman - Very, very nice. It's bright and vibrant like she should be. The head sculpt with rooted hair is an ultra nice touch.
I am officially back on board with this line. The first two waves left me underwhelmed, but these pics have brought me back.I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.Comment

Thanks Scott for posting these!!! Everything looks great. I'm especially psyched about those Twilight Zone figs.
Couple of questions for anyone in the know:
Is that DCU Hall of Justice display an upcoming production item, or just a diorama put together for the show? And are the boots on the wave 3 and 4 Retro heroes actually getting smaller (with the obvious exception of Guy Gardner), or is that just the way the prototypes came out?Comment

Great close up shots Scott. A lot of these lines I'm not really interested in so I'll leave those for other people to comment on.
I wasn't sold on the TZ figures but I'm gonna pick up a few of them I think, especially after seeing the newer ones, (love the Art Carney). I was going to buy the Flash Gordon figures but that neck on Ming still looks like a giraffe, I may have to pass on these or at least wait to see the finished product if thats not it. I'm not a huge Lebowski fan but something about that sweater is calling for me to put one on my Mego Starsky.
As far as the Mattel figures go, I'd rather they skipped the boots on Cheetah. I'm not a fan of the gold (rather than yellow) on Shazam, Black Adam and Wonder Woman. Shazams head seems a bit off to me, kinda reminds me of Bill Paxton as Chet in Weird Science. Flash, for me is underwhelming. I don't like the dimples and his nose looks too fat, kinda like WC Fields. I also worry that if the quality of the emblems remains the same, that Flash's belt and cuff bolts are going to suffer from severe cracking. Would have liked to have seen a removable belt on Flash like they gave Batman. Also really don't care for the treads on the bottom of Flash and Cold's boots, but then again I've tossed the boots on the ones I've gotten anyway. I'm probably gonna pick and choose from these waves only the figures that the final production pieces offer me enough in the way of parts to use for customs. I actually liked the first 2 waves better than these.Last edited by stabilio; Jul 23, '10, 10:14 PM.Comment

I'm still taking all this in. I'm getting two vibes from the Mattel heroes. The first two waves feel very "Super Friends" to me. These next two seem more silver age, especially Flash, MM, Shazam, and Black Adam. It's hard to say until the production figures are in, but my first reaction is the silver age vibe needs toned down a little for these to all mesh.Comment

Sweet pics.
After seeing these up close, the only ones I really like are WW and Flash though I hate Flash's nose.
The Captain Marvel headsculpt is very disappointing. It's just wrong on so many levels not the least of which is the size. This was the one I was most excited about and now the one I like the least.
The heads on ALL of the new figures look too big.
I was rather excited seeing the earlier pix but that has gone out the window after seeing the close ups.
I'm truly saddened and hope the final production pieces are better.
Totally bummed out.Comment

I'm digging that Shazam. Love the gold. Cheetah's boots? Cool! But my favorite has to be Captain Cold. I'm gonna be so broke, but I'll be loving it. Although there seems to be some issues with these, they are just prototypes.

Darn! That thing's awesome!
I could be way off the mark here but I remember Alex Ross basing his Shazam on the actor Fred MacMurray, and to me there looks like a slight trace of MacMurray in that sculpt. He looks like he has MacMurray hair and C.C. Beck eyebrows - but without the C.C. Beck squint.Comment
