This is fantastic news. My daughter was on the porch with some WGSH figures I maintained with docs parts. The kids across the street saw her playing with them and are now bugging me to get them some. I think a mego, being what it is, draws interest. Call it poseable art or whatever, but it has a niche and is interesting to parents who remember them and to their children. I am definitely giddy over this.

Even though I am "thankful" that Marty released Megos, and is resurrecting the name, I'm still not sure what to make of it.
We must not forget that as a businessman, making $$$ is the main target.
So I myself would see Mego -past and future- as a business venture, not necessarily a labour of love. In Ben's book, Marty clearly stated that stuff like WGSH was not his big love (page 217, fourth par.). He really liked Micronauts, but the rest was made mainly for the $$$. And that is his right, you know, and the logical way to run a company.
We love Megos, and that sometimes gives us the idea that these toys were released solely to make kids happy. But toy making is mainly a business.
So I'm unsure whether the return of the 8 inchers is imminent.
And I'm not stressed about it, because I still need a bunch of vintage Megos. At the rate I'm collecting, I can go for vintage, and still not be done by the time I'm 80.
I'd love to see new Megos, but I don't know if Marty will be the one to do it.
Wait and see.
Man, I have to stop reading these "speculation" threads.....

Just to let you know....
We have just rolled out a full year's worth of production
and will get to work on 2009 shortly, but since we are not a traditional
toy company, we don't have to show new product at Toy Fair - we can
start our year later - after the spring rush.
Big news is coming - sit tight and stay tuned.Comment

I really don't understand how no one has attempted to obtain a license from Marvel to create new MEGO figures????Comment

I think that, ahem MICRONAUT sized figures are running the planet now.
Did the mini, unmoveable Star Wars figures come out before Micronauts? I think the original Micronauts would still hold up well against today's stiff little figures. Not that I've looked lately. Do most of the small figures now have articulation? I know the CORPS did. They were great. I bought some for my first son when I first saw them about 14yrs ago I guess.
14 years?!?
I know the TNG figures didn't even have jointed elbows. I'm afraid to go look to see what year that was. I'm going to guess 90ish... ugh.
Those original TNG pieces were truly Motionless figures...
Haven't bought many figures since then.Last edited by cdhall; Jun 8, '09, 12:34 AM.-

Hmmm... I have a different view, though I realize this wasn't the thrust of the post (sorry).
First it's important to note what demo we're talking. You would have to limit it to mainly A) boys of a B) certain age of course. For example, while Barbie has been floundering for years, and Bratz was exceptionally popular but has been hamstrung by legal challenges from Mattel, desperate to kill off their now more successful competition, Littlest Pet Shop over at Hasbro is paying their bills for them. Hasbro, at the moment, is essentially LPS and SW with some Transformers mixed in... and I'm pretty sure in that order. LPS is like printing money for them.
Wrestling figures of various types have been consistently a 6-7" format. Don't let's get started on Spawn figures. Joes have been tossed around in all sorts of sizes. The 3 3/4" standard is well established now, but that doesn't mean that toys automatically do well in that format (which is what might be suggested by any theory that 3 3/4" is some magic bullet standard). The Indiana Jones figures were (mostly) quality but the line tanked super-hard. I think that's due in equal portion to the property being lukewarm with people and because I think the property was mishandled, but whatevs. That's a Hasbro thing... they have a specific marketing/production model and I don't really agree with it but it's how they've structured the business.
Justice League figures hover all around... the actual 3 3/4" series didn't do so well, the 5 inch ones are much more popular. Also the super-stylized 5 inch standard has been popularized with the younger age sets, Batman and Friends, Etc. The older TNG galoob st:tng figures were pretty limited, but they did have bending knees, which were uncommon, even if the weapons were permanent fixtures. Personally I kind of like that for that size. I mean we can get into conversations about relative merits of RevolTech type import toys, but I find these days all the multiple swap-out hand options and other fussiness detracts from the toy aesthetic. I'm kind of a "3 chords and the truther" when it comes to Megos too - I loves me my Conan but sometimes it seems like the extra bits skirt close to just too much gilding.
I would suggest that the 3 3/4 inch format is these days much where the 12" format used to be. In both cases 8" was a stand-alone and was still very successful. Look at Thundercats and He-Man, and all the Power-Lords, Blackstarr, etc spin-offs that competed. Nothing has inherently changed with kids, culture or play patterns... There's nothing to limit the viability of any particular size format.
(Personally, I never liked 9" - I just find the scale off and wrong. A personal thing probably, but it doesn't feel right to me. I suspect my feelings on it are similar to how graphic designers will discuss line weights and such - 9" figs just seem an awkward in-between scale).
You do pay for scale and type. Sometimes what a company will be challenged on doesn't make sense. Like LEGO got hit with the cease and desist for troop building minifig sets by Hasbro, claiming they'd strayed into action figures and away from building sets, as it is narrowly written in their legal contract.
Similar with Diamond/Art Asylum when they tried to do the Sentinel Mini-Mates figure. The figure was huge and going to be rotocast vinyl or something I guess (I hadn't known it was individually part sculpted just like a regular mini-mate until a SDCC panel) until they got hit with a C&D and ended up having to produce it as a resin statue. Which sucks, becase that was an awesome toy concept.
Also DC has a reputation for being difficult with their character licensing, and uber Cease and Desist happy. You might notice that all of the custom heroes in the Twisted Toyfare Theatre were Marvel, and they never did a Green Lantern or Flash. Just saying.Last edited by Tothiro; Jun 8, '09, 4:51 AM.Comment

All this stuff about scale?
I think it should be noted that
Kenner's original success with STAR WARS
has virtually guaranteed that the 3 3/4 scale
will be highly coveted as long as there
are action figures made regardless of lines that
have been unsucessful in that scale."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment
