Nice article! Lucas spent years writing Star Wars and it went through many revisions. He then took some of the deleted material and wrote ESB and ROTJ. He had ideas about where characters came from.

I wish Lucas would just say - Hey, when I realized how big this was going to be, I took some of my unused ideas, thoughts about where characters came form and were going to, and worked it into what became Empire Strikes Back/ ROTJ.

Some of what Lucas says he planned al along is true. The preface to the Novelization of Star Wars released in 77 is a one page summary of The Emporer's rise not unlike the prequels.

He likely had some bigger plans for Vader - why else send him off in to space?

I can even buy the Dark Father name - it still doesn't mean he originally wrote him to be Luke's dad -his own words contradict that notion.

He wanted a dark lord. how to say that in a cool new way? Dark ~ Darth. Vader regardless if the dutch sounds like father instead of vader, it is the dutch word for father. and we somethings call our lord our father. Was he luke's dad in Star Wars? No. Not until 1978 or so.

Was he Luke's dad from the early concepts of ESB? Possibly. Even though early scripts show him not to be, he could have been all along. We know that the relationship was not even revealed to the actor's until after it was shot.

Whether it means Dark Father or not is not relevant.

When he became a separate person from Anakin? Sometime between the release of Star Wars (when it became clear it was huge) and filming for ESB was finished (because it could have been changed up to then.

I used to be one of those that believed that Lucas had planned the "Vader as father" thing all along.

Now, many years later (as one that knows a lot about movie script writing, and how writing can mess with the unassuming public's heads), I realize that these kinds of things are easy to explain away, especially if they happened before the internet.

That said: I'm still not eliminating the possibility that Lucas stumbled upon "Vader" as the Dutch word for "father" when looking for names to attach to the character who killed Anakin (who was Luke's actual father at the time, thus a reason to use a word for "father" for the character's name... as in: The "dark" guy who killed Luke's father).

I know that the "Dutch" thing was mentioned in the article, but personally that's neither here nor there, as I've taken that into consideration.

If there is a CHANCE that Lucas DID indeed toy with the idea of Vader as Luke's father (while not committing to it) as early as when the character was created, I'll concede that I'm sure it is a small chance.

But if it is the case that the word Vader is actually a shortened version of the word "invader" as the article hypothesizes?

      Then, wow, what a coincidence.

Just going to chime in on the whole Vader/father thing. If that's the case, then Palpatine coming up with the name for him in Revenge of the Sith doesn't make much sense.

While you refer to a film that has no bearing on the real Star Wars universe, the naming does make sense if the name Darth Vader means Dark Lord rather than Dark Father.

            2nd viewing thoughts:

I still loved it. Knowing there is an intermission for the restroom was nice (riding the Llamas).

The codebreaker/traitor will end up on the rebels side. A little Han a little Lando.

First viewing I didn't know Luke was projecting himself via the Force during the fight until it was over, then I realized I should have known by the lightsaber.
Second viewing I realized they never mad contact during the fight and Luke left no footprints.

I realized he said Kylo killed HALF the students. Where are the other half now?

During Force Awakens I felt Ren $ Rey were brother sister. Lsat Jedi first showing I assumed Kylo lied to Rey about her parents. Now I think he told her what he knew. But he believes the lie. Snoke told Kylo and Rey he linked their minds and gave them visions. The story about the junk dealers was from Snoke.

I thought Kylo was able to kill Snole because he was thinking about continuing in teh dark side and ruling the universe. Snoke just didn't understand it was with him. Now I saw that he got away with it only in part because of that. He was literally saying out loud what he was doing with Luke;s lightsaber while holding his on in mock execution of rey.

The fact that this movie is getting bad reviews only solidifies that I don't fit into the norm of mainstream society. I'm at the point where I more look forward to movies the public hates than loves because there's more a chance that I'll like it. Deadpool was loved and I had to shut it off as unwatchable.
I loved Last Jedi beginning to end.
To each his own. If you loved Deadpool I could care less to try and point out the reasons you shouldn't. Silly waste of time.

If you look again you’ll also notice Luke appears younger as well.Beared and hair coloured, less grey and trimmed.

^Hamill looked great as "Force Projection Luke".

Did some of the other students go dark and become "The Knights of Ren" and follow Kylo? That angle seems to have been dropped or pushed to the side in this one.

I don't. He got a boat load of cash, read the script, disagreed with the direction, and still did the job.

I'm a true Star Wars fan and I don't say that. One could say a true fan would have seen Ben killed off in the first film and return in the two sequels as a force ghost. Was I bummed that they killed him off? Absolutely!! But I fully expect to see him in the next film just like we saw Yoda in this one. Mark Hamil will be back.

I didn't get that.. so if you project an astral form, it gets a haircut and looks like it used a bad batch of "Just for Jedi" hair coloring?

I just chalked it up to being how REN perceived him, because I thought he looked older when he appeared to Leila.

And they killed off Han in The Force Awakens. Doesn't seem like there was that much outrage over that.
