Nice article! Lucas spent years writing Star Wars and it went through many revisions. He then took some of the deleted material and wrote ESB and ROTJ. He had ideas about where characters came from.
I wish Lucas would just say - Hey, when I realized how big this was going to be, I took some of my unused ideas, thoughts about where characters came form and were going to, and worked it into what became Empire Strikes Back/ ROTJ.
Some of what Lucas says he planned al along is true. The preface to the Novelization of Star Wars released in 77 is a one page summary of The Emporer's rise not unlike the prequels.
He likely had some bigger plans for Vader - why else send him off in to space?
I can even buy the Dark Father name - it still doesn't mean he originally wrote him to be Luke's dad -his own words contradict that notion.
He wanted a dark lord. how to say that in a cool new way? Dark ~ Darth. Vader regardless if the dutch sounds like father instead of vader, it is the dutch word for father. and we somethings call our lord our father. Was he luke's dad in Star Wars? No. Not until 1978 or so.
Was he Luke's dad from the early concepts of ESB? Possibly. Even though early scripts show him not to be, he could have been all along. We know that the relationship was not even revealed to the actor's until after it was shot.
Whether it means Dark Father or not is not relevant.
When he became a separate person from Anakin? Sometime between the release of Star Wars (when it became clear it was huge) and filming for ESB was finished (because it could have been changed up to then.
