Let's not forget a cracking good score by the late great Jerry Goldsmith.

^ wasn't most of the Trek 5 score just lifted from The Motion Picture ?

The major themes yes, but that's a bit of an over simplification. There are some terrific action cues, and a lovely friendship motif that was a bit of a prototype for the First Contact theme, plus a beautiful and lyrical theme for the journey to the planet, and a very subtle but effective motif for Sybock and Spock's brotherhood.

If you're at all a lover of film music, it should be in your collection.

I wish they would let Shatner release his version of the movie. it would be interesting to see if he could actually make it a better movie or not

Entertainment Weekly gave Star Trek V a thorough "examination" a couple weeks ago:

Great googly-moogly, that was like reading a summary written by Bizarro #1 . . . As a working writer, I wonder how that got through an editor . . . or how that guy stays employed . . .

The best fan theory I've read on TFF is that it's all a dream/nightmare Kirk has while out camping with Spock and McCoy -- the weirdness doesn't really get rolling until they're all at the campfire and if you assume Kirk nods off there and doesn't wake up again until we see them around the campfire at the end, it really is an interesting way to see all the inconsistencies and general "huh?" in the movie. Recut to this with more of a David Lynch mentality, and it could become the weirdest and artiest and most challenging Trek of all.

That said, we all know Shatner was just trying to do a ST western with Kirk saving everyone from the Devi, and missed. But the pieces are all kinda there . . .

I have a soft spot for the movie, mostly because I made out with a girl in her car for a half hour before it opened and I was going for more after it ended. So, it was the greatest movie ever.
                        You da man, Palitoy.

Rumor has it that Star Trek VI's working title was 'The Apology'. People who say that the Abrams films are bad obviously haven't watched Star Trek V in awhile or haven't seen it at all.
