I'd never seen that poster before, but you're answer is spot on. There should have also been a barf bag and and an air bag because that thing completely crashed.
Yeah, I remember fan out cry over how horrible that poster was.
I have a soft spot for the movie, mostly because I made out with a girl in her car for a half hour before it opened and I was going for more after it ended. So, it was the greatest movie ever.

I like V. Yeah, the budget cuts and reshoots are obvious. Yeah, Sybok throws off Spock's backstory somewhat, and it does make the B crew look gullible and less than heroic... BUT it gives EVERYONE some nice character moments, and it has some of the best Kirk/Spock/Bones scenes of any Trek production.
I have a warm place for Star Trek V. Yes, it's not without it's issues. Some of the character development is a bit color-by-the-numbers in application and Shatner took perhaps too many stabs at comic relief where he probably would have been better served focusing on more dramatic elements of the story. But where it works it really works well and I loved the analogy of pain and it's application in the life experience. Those moments were very nicely done and easily redeem the weaker moments when I weigh the sum total of the film. Thumbs up for me. In regards to the poster though? Yeah... Never seen that and glad I didn't before it was released. Impossibly cheesy.
