Much as I LOVE Star wars (I remember waiting in line 3 hrs to see it with my dad in 77) I will go Star trek. Not that either creator was very good about remebering the universe he created from one generation to the next (both properties are SO full of contradictions in their "History") but if it wasn't for Trek I don't think the public would have been primed to accept the star wars dramatic tales They would have wanted Forbidden planet or a shoot em up.

Wow. I mean, really - WOW!
Before I stood in line with my older brother Tim to see Star Wars in '77, I was a Star Trek fan. I didn't have many of the collectibles for Trek then.

After seeing Star Wars, I was, and still am a Star Wars fan. I like Classic Star Wars and Classic Star Trek. I'm not a big fan of the recent trilogy. The original Star Wars trilogy caused an explosion in sci-fi and a renewed interest in Star Trek. I think the shuttle Enterprise was named after Star Wars opened (I'm probably wrong, I know). I don't think there would have been any Star Trek movies without Star Wars. Most of the special effects for Star Trek - heck, just about all movie special effects - are done by Lucasfilm or Skywalker, aren't they?

Both are genius. Sheer, unadulterated genius.

Everybody wanted to ride the Star Wars bandwagon. I remember that the classic Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon movies were brought back out of the vault and shown on TV as the Original War in the Stars, or something like that. I think that was on WGN, Channel 9. Then there was a new sci-fi movie at the movies almost every week. Wasn't there one with Richard Thomas from The Waltons? The first Battlestar Galactica with Lorne Greene was on TV along with Buck Rogers.

As much as I want to take Star Trek over Star Wars, I probably wouldn't have been a Trekkie/Trekker if I hadn't been a Star Wars zombie gobbling up everything like Pacman.

I even kinda like the Faith over Philosophy of Star Wars - Star Trek. I don't think Kirk would beat Han Solo, they would be hangin' together. I think Han Solo is alot like Kirk. Star Wars could be another mirror universe for Star Trek.

But that's just my two cents.

          Points for Star Treks Impact

Some of the best Science fiction authors of our day have contributed to Star Treks long long long life. Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, Larry Niven to name a few off the top of my head.

Many NASA astronauts, engineers, scientist, inventors have openly come out and said it was Star Trek That inspired them to achieve and create .
Yet to see any one claim that of Star Wars.

Important people like Martin Luthar King JR , Who's praise of Nichelle Nicholes role, showed the importance on our culture of showing a future where all races and sexes would be equal.

Look at some of the barriers broken by Trek Like the first telivised interracial kiss.

Star Wars has a big bang and some pretty effects thats it. Even its movie changing way of telling a story was stolen from the earlier movie serials.

Hmm....You do have a good point here.kind of!?!?!?
Kirk and Solo are similar and that's because Lucas has no original Ideas and modeled the character after KIRK!!!
How about C-3PO???? Does he not remind you of a certain Science officer???
(C-3PO quote "sir the odds of us succeeding are a 10,000 to one")Sounds like something Spock said before to me...
All his space battle scenes were from WWI dog fighting scenes that he copied frame for frame by his own admission...When I was in school it was called *P*L*A*G*I*A*R*I*S*M* you were not praised for it???
But Don't get me wrong though I do like star wars just not as much as STAR TREK.

Personally I could give a fig about space exploration...but to each their own.

I'm not a fan of either's offshoot properties in any way but I'd have to say I am more into Star Trek then Star Wars. This may simply be because I prefer episodic television over movies, I'm not sure.

I think it's difficult to debate which has made a bigger impact on popular culture.

I like Star Trek, but I love STAR WARS. It's exciting action-adventure space opera with a mythological basis, that is shot, edited and post-produced by master cinematic craftsmen. It also addresses certain deep philisophical points such as family, friendship, compassion, love -- and the fall from those virtues into the vices of greed, arrogance and power-hunger.

I was a huge Star Wars fan when I was a kid (and later into my teens), I saw the first film at a drive-in and loved it.

I couldn't care less about anything related to Star Wars now...Lucas' mucking with the films and the horrid prequels (I saw Ep 1 and 3...I haven't bothered to watch 2) have pretty much ruined any enjoyment I got out of it.

I like Star Trek to an extent, but it's just not my thing.

                    Space:1999 season one for me.

Mind tricks only work on Trek fans ... err the weak minded.

Star Wars ... such an easy question.

Actually, many would argue that Trek changed movies, television and collectibles forever. Heck, you might not have had a Star Wars, at least as we know it without previous successful sci-fi like Star Trek. If Star Trek had not been successfully petitioned by the fans and made it through 3 years seasons, it would not have had enough total episodes to make it into syndication. And as we all know once in syndication this is where Star Trek thrived as it was finally aired in more family friendly time slots by more understanding smaller TV stations who helped it finally find the large audience it needed and deserved. These smaller stations got it into more favorable time slots helping it grow an audience and become what it is today.
And as for collectibles, Star Trek owns Star Wars on that one. And I am not talking about the volume of toys, but just who was first and who layed the ground work for later sci-fi toys

I have not gone through and read every post in this thread and I would hope that someone else has already said this... but like the two BSG shows thread, you honestly can't compare Star Trek with Star Wars. I know you are trying to in this thread but they are totally different other than being sci-fi with space ships.
I could use a bunch of analogies here but I hope most of you realize that other than a friendly and amusing debate, trying to compare these two makes no more sense than comparing a Fiero with a Lamborghini. Yes, they are both two seater cars and both have four wheels but thats where it ends and where an attempted comparison does as well.

I enjoy both Star Trek and Star Wars equally, but for different reasons and I get different things out of each as well.

So, now I return you to your previously scheduled debating..

Capt. Kirk: "Is there anyone on this ship, who even remotely, looks like Satan?"
Mr. Spock: "I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain"
Capt. Kirk: "No, Mr. Spock, I didn't think you would be"

I find it interesting that any time anyone in N. America does a spaceship show, movie or book, it invariably follows one of these two formats. BOTH have made a completely indellible imprint, for better or worse.
