So here's a few things questions I havefrom the show:

When the Doctor contacted all his past incarnations, he was also able to bring in his next version, Capaldi. So was this a one off event he was able to do because of the time war fallout, or has he always been able to contact a prior regeneration? Same with the next Doctor... Was he "invited" to help, or just show up because he knew what had happened? I'm going with the latter, since I think it's established that the Doctor has no idea who or what he will become. Although it would be cool to see a crossover episode where a future Doctor visits the current version and we see the event from the current's viewpoint instead of the other way around. Maybe not the next version, but one from 6 or 7 regeneration a down the line.

Why was Osgood wearing the 4th's scarf?

I had a lot of fun, Tennant and Smith together were great, and they should have their own PI series!
The Zygons looked cool, but I felt that the storyline about them was the weakest part of this movie. I would have liked to have seen more about the Time War, luckily the main part was focused on just that.
When they talked about the Curator, I was going "please please let it be Tom Baker!", and yes, we got him. What a beautiful emotional moment. Maybe, in the end, a Time Lord gets to pick his favorite incarnation as his last "life". Great ideay, loved it.

And the way it all looked! A lot of feature films can only dream of looking this polished. Terrific work!

So I guess for the Christmas Special, we move on from where we left off, with Clara going after the Great Intelligence to stop his plans?

    Hmmmm....

Hee heee.... good stuff. There were SO MANY weird little bits they snuck in. Like the problem with when the UNIT stories took place, the opening, the ad for this episode. (I thought it was nifty how they used the "bullet time" shots in the ad, which looked neat and ended up forshadowing the Gallifreyan Art bit.) They seemed to imply that Time Lords still have 12 regenerations, and I don't know about you.... but that quick shot of the 13th Doctor sure LOOKED evil.

It put me in mind of the change between the second and third Doctors; how they framed it off as a big change, and based the Doctor more firmly on Earth afterwards. This seems to set up a long term goal for the Doctor's wandering: finding Gallifrey. Plus, it seemed to make the Zygons super-heavies in the universe now; as opposed to the guest monster they once were.

The ending was the biggest and most awesome copout in the history of tv! I doubt we'll see something like that again.

    >Did they tweak that or was Galifrey always destroyed?

I thought from the beginning it had been destroyed, but the war itself had been sort of sealed off from the rest of time. So it played out, beginning to end, in it's own little space. So all that was left here and now/then/later was the ruins of the planet, and since Gallifrey represented a kind of absolute time that's all you'd be able to access through normal time travel. All the other stuff happened, but in a part of history/future that had been cut off from the rest. Only through extreme circumstances could you bypass or acces that point. With two forces capable of time travel you'd HAVE to isolate the battlefield, or else they'd keep going back and changing things over and over and over....

But I'm still left with some questions that I hope will be answered at some point (or maybe they were and somehow I missed it...)

What happened when the Doctor and Clara were in his time-stream and they met the War Doctor? How did they get from that point to the point where this special started?
My take on this is that after the Doctor sent Clara the leaf to bring her back out of the time-stream that when she finally saw him she was separating from the time-stream but could still see thing in it - after she fully left the time-stream they might have had some more adventures and then he brought her to England where she got a job as a teacher. The Smith Doctor's stories have, at times, jumped around with gaps in between his showing up to get his companion for an adventure - it happened with Amy and Rory.

The way I understood the Time Lord/Dalek war was 'time locked' which meant they were in a continuous never ending war. The universe would be safe while the Timelords were trapped in a war for eternity. Did they tweak that or was Galifrey always destroyed?

Either way I'm glad Galifrey has a chance to come back. It sucked that the Daleks were alive and kicking while the Doctors people were still lost.
I was thinking the same thing - as I understood what was explained before is that everything was in a time loop but now the Doctor had burnt and totally destroyed Galifrey - a bit of revision to say the least. Of course the time loop had been broken by the Dalek Caan ( Stolen Earth ) so that could have had a ripple effect. I also glad that the Doctor no longer has that weight on his conscience.

I think that since the current Doctor knows the truth and in his mind the War Doctor is a true Doctor that the numbering has to change going forward with Eccleston the 10th, Tennant the 11th, Smith the 12th and Capaldi being the 13th ( and final Doctor, at least from this regeneration cycle ).

Anyone else like the nod to the original Doctor's first episode with the sign in the opening shot - I.M. Foreman 76 Totter's Lane

The cameo with Ian McKellan was worth it alone and it was a good way to work the other Doctors into the 50th celebration. They would have looked daft appearing in Day of The Doctor.

    Fantastic! Brilliant!
I loved the final scenes, Tom Baker & then the 12 Doctors shot.

The only complaint I have is the 15 or so minutes of build up BBC did. Wish they had shown the McGann webisode instead of the chatter of pointless who is your favorite nonsense. 50 years to prepare for this and they found the five most boring people in all of time & space to host. Where was John Barrowman? Anybody else? Seriously, the biggest celeb guest was the 3rd string guy from Mythbusters?!? Really BBC?

New guy here...but man, those guys know how to mark an anniversary! WOW!!!

When I saw the back of the head, I knew it was Baker...just from those "Doctor Revisited" specials. Very fitting given him being the oldest living Doctor, and of course, the most popular and longest running of all time.

Seeing Capaldi's eyes was a nice treat! Will no doubt help to endear him to newer fans, like myself.

So, do you think the numbers will be officially bumped up, or will Hurt be known only as "The War Doctor"?

    Chris

The end pushed it over the top, but I wish 5, 6, 7 and 8 showed up too

Seeing Tom put such a tear in my eye
Me too my freind. Not everything I wanted but I am happy for what I got which was more than I expected. I really liked how all of them save galifrey and as soon as he heard Tom my brother said "that's Tom" and it's what he had stated he'd like to do in the special - a place where the doctor can talk with his former self

    Spoilers.

All this week I kept thinking "i'd have the new Doctor make a cameo", clearly Steven Moffat does not need me as an advisor. Loved it, loved Tom.
