It would be such a different story if Lucas continued to tinker with the movies but was committed to keeping the untouched originals in the state of the art format.
Having the original versions of the Star Trek episodes on blu ray along with the CGI retouched versions allows me to enjoy those CGI versions because it's an option, not a replacement.
I get a kick out of extended and/or updated effects versions but only if the original versions are not taken away.
Even if it's a little thing. On the blu ray releases of Wizard Of Oz, they digitally erased the wire that was making Cowardly Lion's tail wag. Same thing with when there was some wires showing in the Superman movies.
My guess is that he's trying to keep it up to date to maintain it's longevity. The attention span of kids these days is getting shorter and shorter with each generation and I have no doubt in my mind a many kids today would say "what the hell is this?" to the first three films (in their original theatrical state) after seeing the more recent ones.
It's a valid excuse for him to continue to milk the franchise for all it's worth.
My opinion: don't tamper with classics. Although we can always just watch the old VHS releases. Don't the current DVD releases have the original theatrical cuts anyway?
This reminds me of The Exorcist: Version You Never Seen nonsense. They took an absolutely terrifying classic and turned it into "Terror in the Haunted House"...with all those moronically random flashes of the demon's face. One of the reasons that face was so terrifying, was that it wasn't over shown.
That change just proves, once again, how Lucas does not understand the basic composition of a scene. It's interesting that even though Lucas owns the Star Wars license, he did not direct the Empire or Jedi installments. I think its pretty disrespectful to go in and change another person's work without their approval. I wonder what the Director's Guild has to say about that?
I would only have purchased them to have had the opportunity to see SW and TESB in Blu-Ray clarity. The rest of them, I don't really care about. BUT, if he's made changes to ALL the movies, THEN I really have no interest in them at all...
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.
The original trilogy will be, in my mind, the only true Star Wars films. And so much of it has to do with the fact Lucas did not have final say in everything at that point. There was plenty of people who injected their own ideas that gave it the flavor it did. Lucas by himself, surrounded by "yes" men, does not touch the original series. And every time he messes with those films, he demonstrates why he should remain in marketing and stay far away from the editing room. I believe in time this will all be corrected...after Lucas is gone. He's not looking too healthy these days. He's still trying to squeeze every drop of blood out of this license before he plops over. Pretty sad that he can't leave well enough alone.
