I really liked it. Probably enough to go see it again while it's still out. IMO, it was done right and respectful of the originals.

One thing I find striking, though, is the lack of action figures or a comic adaption. Did companies have reservations about this being popular or is 20th Century Fox wanting it to be seen as adult fare?

I saw it this past Wednesday...and it's already my favorite film of the year.

Some POTA purists might hate me for this...and I'm not saying the new film is better or worse...but the events of the new film are much more plausible than the simplistic nuclear war approach of the original.

In a nuclear holocaust...why would a much smaller population of apes (numbering a few thousand) be in a better position to thrive than seven billion humans?

Apes are no less susceptible to radiation than humans. A larger population (humans) will stand a better chance of surviving as a species than a much smaller number (apes).

Radiation would have covered the entire Earth...including the natural habitats of the apes.

The replacing of dogs and cats with chimps as pets storyline...is a dumb as you can get as well...lol.

      ***SOME SPOILERS AHEAD***

You guys already said it...I'm just repeating stuff...

In the new one...a combination of intellectually enhanced apes...along with a virus that seems likely to wipe away the vast majority of humanity...is a more realistic approach on finally creating a true planet of apes....a dominant apes species (with renewed intellect to procreate like humans)...and an infected/subordinate species...that looks like it's going to drastically dwindle in numbers...humans.

This has got to be the rebirth of the franchise(which Burton tried to destroy), because it was fantastic!! Well written, plausible, great effects, great acting, I would also say my favorite movie this year!!! Capt America, X-men, Thor, Green Lantern, Harry Potter were all good movies this summer but this one beats them all in my humble opinion. I went in with high hopes and it beat them!! Bravo!!

I agree with you 110%, ApeAddict. So far this year, this has been hands down the best movie I've seen. Hopefully. it'll get recognized as such come Oscar time and not just for special effects...!

I saw it on Tuesday and really enjoyed it. The filmmakers did a wonderful job of character development with Caesar. The story totally sucks you in, and you really feel for him and the other apes. They also did a great job with not overdoing the story. I know it sounds crazy based on the subject matter, but the movie is so well done that it doesn't even seem that far-fetched while your watching it. I have to admit from watching the previews I was expecting a little more action, but I guess you have to advertise what sells. I think the sequel will be kind of like what Aliens was compared to Alien and will open up for some rip-roaring action.

              Monkey spoiler below....!!!

Am I the only person who cheered when we saw Caesar riding atop the horse out of the fog towards the cops? I told MIB41 when I saw the cops mounted on horses this would likely be where the apes learned to ride horses in the first place. The thing I love most about this movie is it just took so many parts from the original POTA and kind of showed you HOW they started. Ultra cool stuff!

I cheered when I saw a Schoolbus (I thought it might be tied into "Battle" which it probably wasn't) the ape on horseback was better than I hoped.

Going to see it with a friend this weekend, honestly looking forward to a rewatch.

Yes...the horseback scene gave me chills...it was a wonderful scene...same with the school bus.

The apes have to thank the famous San Francisco fog as well...that helped them organize and protect themselves under cover...

Seen the movie last night and overall thought it was fantastic. Having all the POTA movies and TV series I was thinking it may have been a bit of a letdown but even the wife enjoyed it.

Do you think there will be another made?

So terrified to see this movie. Sigh. Tomorrow I will see it.

                        Jess,

See it as a stand-alone movie...not as a POTA movie...if you do that...I think you'll enjoy it just fine.

Actor Andy Serkis is an amazing performer...even though you never get to see him...you do see his actions and movements through the motion-capture CGI Caesar character...the guy (and the effects) is/are amazing...

I think Caesar will grab your heart...you will feel for him...and eventually root for him...

I loved the movie. In one word. Brilliant! Did anyone else feel incredibly sad when the Gorilla saved and later died for Caesar?

It had it's predictable 50% drop this Friday but it's still number one and will likely be in the top 15 movies of the year by the end of the month. It's actually doing better than Fox's other genre entry this year X-Men First Class.

Finally got out to see it last night and really enjoyed it. The uptown theatre I was in for the early evening show was pretty packed.
