We had to guess and pay attention and even by the end we were left with more questions. Most of the Apes films were 1 man, (or apes or 2 apes), against the world, against fate, against all odds. This film is the slow build-up to an ape riot.
Pitch perfect explanation. There is no magic to this reboot. And well that can be said about a lot of the reboots in recent years. This is just Apes Versus Humans. What exactly can the next film after this be focused on?

They should have just taken the original film, upgraded the look/feel to be a bit more modern. And carefully use CGI when needed and BINGO! Perfect remaking.

When it comes to POTA, I need the in between human/ape combo that the makeup provided. Having them look entirely simian puts it off for me.

Mego73 is exactly right. Without the classic "evolved" ape look from the original movies (and the tv series for that matter), the concept just doesn't work for me either. While I'm not against CGI per se, in this specific case it cannot compare to real actors behind some clever makeup.

In my opinion, what made the original movies work so well was the ability of the actors to emote/project through the makeup and thus enable the audience to identify with the various characters and allow them to suspend their disbelief for the duration on the film(s). Simply having a "normal" ape appear intelligent, and even speaking for that matter, just isn't the same - there simply isn't any common ground. I mean, giving a chimpanzee a rifle at the Dallas zoo certainly doesn't have the same emotional impact as a 6' 8" human-proportioned gorilla riding up on horseback shooting at you in a cornfield. While Tim Burton's movie lacked a good story and strong acting (or a strong story and good acting if you prefer), at least those apes were closer to the original than this attempt.
