Scott if you want good story and character development, go see X-Men First Class. Great film. Easily the best in the series.

Without knowing jack about this movie except review comments comparing it to E.T. or The Goonies; my son and I went to see it last night.
Not 15 minutes into it; I knew this was my show for the year...and nothing had even really happened yet LOL
What I mean is; the cinematography and emotional hook you get from the very start. There are going to be a bunch of griping when this comes out on BluRay because of all the beautiful film grain...I loved it! I am so sick of perfectly clean movies these days...it was a nice change to see something aged.
Aged. Interesting word I choes there....
IF the show was overrun with CGI environments, well, kudos to them because i couldn't tell. The CGI wasn't over-the-top and shoved in your face, down your throat, and out your...well, you know..
This show was time travel for a person like me.
A fella approaching 40 next year...damn...if they'd only brought in some crush velvet ropes and wood panelling in the lobby to give me vintage smell; then I'd swore I was back in 1981 at the local theater.
This movie was a nice change..not a blatent, in-your-face remake that reached me on an emotional level because of what I walked away with.
I definetely escaped reality for a couple hours.
Movie of the year for me.Comment

I'm in the same "two halves" camp. My viewing experience with this was actually very similar to Stephen King's "IT" when I watched it many years ago. Great story and character development and I was completely engrossed... Till it fell apart at the end. I remember sitting in front of the TV and thinking "WHAT... is this what everything led to???". The creature/aliens were even very similar between IT and Super 8. Having said that, it's a very good movie that I am not disappointed I went to see.
Here's an interesting observation. My wife and daughter had no clue why the movie was titled Super 8 after watching the movie. They both asked me about it on the ride home and I had to explain. I wonder how many other people would not get the title as well. Probably more than you would think.
And, one question - It's probably me and my remembrance of things, but were there self service gas station/mini markets in 1979? The movie was timed in the summer of 79 based on the news report of the TMI incident in the one scene. I seem to remember gas/station mini markets being an early 80's thing, but I could very well be wrong.Last edited by megoapesnut; Jun 20, '11, 2:26 PM.Comment

I thought it stunk. With the exception of some OK character development in the beginning (the kids were likeable) I thought the overall story and feel of the thing was complete cheese. IMO, the whole movie felt phoned in--like Abrams could've written this script in his friggin sleep. Yeesh.....Comment

Ressurecting this thread 'cos I just came home from seeing this, (b-day gift to myself). I really loved this movie. It really had that mid to late 70s teen movie feel. Yeah it had CGI, but it wasn't constantly in your face. The scenery as excellent, had that real 70s vibe to it. Good plot, lotsa suspense and action. I loved it!"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."Comment

I thought the movie was very good and yes...it feels very much like a 70's film. On that note...The kids loved it and could not stop talking about it.
I am reminded of when I took the kids to see Indian Jones and The Crystal Skull a few years back. I thought the movie was just okay but the kids were blown away and would not stop talking about it. They needed to see the other Indian Jones films so off to Blockbuster we went.
I also picked up Jaws which I saw when I was around 8. The kids sat on the couch with thier mouths open when the shark popped up on Roy Schieder.
If the kids say Super 8 was good, I need to remind myself to think like a kid when I am watching the movie. This is a future classic, we just may not know it yet.Last edited by deputypowell; Jul 15, '11, 1:23 PM.Wanted: Slime Sticker PLEASE!Comment
