I saw Super 8 last night and walked away with mixed feelings. It felt like there were two halves to this film. The initial set up with the kids was great. It felt nostalgic and Spielberg-esque. They were nerdy, inquisitive and filled with wonder. And nope, I didn't see any Mego's in the scenery which, based on the Halloween poster on the wall, put them in '78 or '79. I did spot a Big Jim vehicle in the box and one of the kids playing with a Remco Mummy figure. So the sets and the first half of the film were great. The second half became something entirely different. Without giving anything away or spoiling plot points, let me just say that characters and items that seem to have story responsibilities in the first half, turned out not to really have any importance in the final act. Or let's say director Abram's ability to try and link analogies were very weak. I felt like Marvel comics had written this script. Tons of dead end subplots that went no where. There was this nonstop build to...well...the point of the film. And when it was over, me and my friend turned to one another and said, "What was the point of the first 60 minutes?" For me it was loaded with potential but ended up not flowing out with a great deal of logic as presented. I would give it a 5 out 10. I was expecting a much better plot.

MIB41 hit it on the head perfectly. Great set up, characters, nostalgic feel, etc... But it fell short story wise and lots things they established early on, kind of went nowhere. You could totally tell he's riffing on Spielberg and it is one hell of an homage, but it doesn't even come close to to touching the emotional buttons and character relationships of the films it's trying to copy. 5/10

I expected better from JJ, especially with Berg producing.

After seeing Super 8 I can say this (Spoiler free) it was a very well put together movie, and just as enjoyable as i thought it would be. It was a cross between ET and Cloverfield, minus the shaky camera. I had no complaints about it other than the fact that it had very little payoff at the end for the time and emotion invested. worth the price of admission.

After having absorbed the film for a couple of days...I'm now feeling like you...first half was great (for the very reasons you pointed out)...and the second half...well...again...not to give away any spoilers...but yes...agreed as well.

I no longer give it four out of five stars...now it's three out of five...

I really enjoyed it, but I do somewhat agree with the above criticisms. It really nailed the old Spielbergian feel, though.

I saw it today and liked it, but it didn't really strike me as life-changing and thought they tipped their hand too early as to how they'd escape. Don't get me wrong--movies don't have to be life-changing--it just didn't cause me to think in any substantial way. Excellent popcorn flick that reminded me of my childhood, though.

But Super 8 is pretty decent.

Go to AMC 16 Emeryville...pay for X-Men...then sneak into Super 8...I do it all the time...
