I don't understand why they'd go with CGI when the best part of the Burton film was the prosthetics.

CGI Apes.
Some studios are so addicted to CG, it becomes totally pointless. I am Legend would have been perfect...with actors in make-up. Now it felt like cartoon characters.
Use CG when all else fails, I say.
One day, we're going to go to the zoo, and the guy at the ticket booth will ask: "Would you like to see CG Apes or 3-D Apes?"
"Uh, no real ones."
"Huh?"
"Yeah, the animals."
"Guido, there's some weirdo here wants to see actual monkeys. Do we have any left?"
"We've got an old gorilla in the back. Lemme see if he's available....".

Keep in mind, from everything I've read , all the other apes in this film will be (or look like) modern era apes. Pretty hard to costume an actor to look like an actual chimpanzee. The only POTA looking ape will be Ceasar, who will most likely be in makeup, as they mentioned before they were going for the John Chambers look. Even if he is CGI, look at Avatar, them blue smurfy looking dudes were all CGI overtop of actors, and audiences accepted them...even if they didnt like the story."Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

EXCLUSIVE: James Franco In Talks To Star In Fox Prequel Deadline.comComment

James Franco: From Soap Star to Apes Man?
Continuing his non-traditional career path, James Franco has signed on to star in Rise of the Apes, a prequel to Planet of the Apes, according to Variety. Based on a French novel, the Apes conceit has spawned the 1968 Charlton Heston classic (and its four sequels), a 1970s TV series and Tim Burton 's 2001 reboot with Mark Wahlberg.
Set in the present, Rise of the Apes adds genetic engineering to the familiar tale about apes who get smart and revolt against the human race. Franco will reportedly play a scientist who tries to help an ape that's been used as a lab animal.
Sounds like things don't work out that well. Rise is scheduled to be released June 24, 2011.

I'm probably the only one, but I am looking forward to this.
I read somewhere...(dark horizons I think?)...that they were already building the sets in Vancouver and that filming is set to kick off shortly. That would be my main concern here...It seems Fox is really rushing this out, and that usually leads to a crummy film. I guess the script may have been in the works for awhile, and is polished like a stone, but it still seems like less than a month or so ago they were just announcing the plan to even do a prequel?Last edited by Captain; May 21, '10, 3:29 PM."Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

With the time travel aspect of the apes movies, the next movie could be a sequel and a remake at the same time with Taylor landing on a Planet of the Apes world where the humans live in villages controlled by the apes like the last movie or TV show.Comment

For the Canadians
"Rise of the Apes" has put out a call for actors and extras who would like to play some humans of the "lambs to the slaughter" variety (apes need not apply). Shooting will take place in Vancouver July 5th - Sept. 30th.
