I think "Rose" was a lot more forgivable because it was the first episode of the New Series and we hadn't seen a previous new episode since 1989 (not counting the movie).
We were hungry for almost anything Doctor Who.
"Rose" split the Doctor Who fans in thirds ....
1. People saw flaws but enjoyed it enough to stick around ... (this was me)
2. People loved it
3. People hated it and got turned off to the New Series
For me, I think it was Eccelston himself that got me liking the New Series and at least giving it a chance.
He was a great Doctor and I wish he stayed around longer.
Matt Smith seems "ok", but I think if he was the first New Series Doctor I might not have stuck it out.
I think one of my problems is I had too big expectations from Steven Moffat.
I had the wrong idea that he was a big Classic Series fan and was going to drive the show to be more Classic like.
Instead, we kind of got a Walmart brand version of the RTD series.
