What exactly was going on with the island at the bottom of the ocean in the Sideways world? I originally assumed it got there post-Jughead when the "alternate reality" was created but since it turned out it wasn't an alternate reality created by Jughead then what caused the island to sink? Is it because it's purgatory, there was no need for the island anymore, since I guess it served as the source for souls? I'm confused.....

Walt may have not been in purgatory because 1) he hasn't passed on yet and 2) he was on the island for less than 90 days (it was 90 days I think when the Oceanic Six got rescued and Walt was long gone by then). So he really didn't have as much a connection as everyone else did. And if he has passed on, he probably was an adult and had formed more meaningful relationships than he did with the castaways.

Managed to get through 24 hours without spoilers. Just watched it.

What a glorious death Jack had. Beautiful scene.

It was totally schmaltzy, but it got me every time a set of loved ones were reunited in sideways and "remembered".

I'm totally willing to just go with it at this point.

When I re-watched those Sideways scenes today I caught myself getting a bit choked up, which didn't happen yesterday...It's starting to settle in I think...

I think the idea was that purgatory is timeless, so it wouldn't have mattered when Walt died. I think they just chose not to deal with it.

I'm in the "What the...???" column.
Not hating on it but very disappointed in so many things...all of which were mentioned in the previous posts.
Was very emotional to watch all the characters find each other and was expecting the "Happily Ever After" ending as well.
Almost expected Penny to be the key to the whole thing since she was totally shut out of the sideways stuff. At first I thought maybe that would've been Juliet but she showed up there finally in the finale.
Another disappointment was the Jimmy Kimmel special. They kept promoting "alternate endings" and then all we got were comedic skits playing on other famous series finales. While they were funny, I was kind of ticked because they made me expect real alternate endings.

More questions than answers for sure but here's my take on some them:

I think they kind of de-powered Walt when the polar bear was shown to be from the smaller island and never really went back to his story. One question I have is why would Ben really let Michael and Walt go? He had no reason to and a lot to loose if they got back and started talking about the island. And why didn't they do just that? Help their fellow castaways and let the world know what was going on? Or was that touched on in a later ep?

The Dharma drops I always felt were a result of the time dilation of the island. The drop was made in the 70's but was off course and landed decades later.

MIB was never named and doesn't need to be I guess. I think he was turned into the smoke monster because of his evil intentions and once in that state Jacob felt he had to be contained on the island. Up until that point it was the Mom that was holding them on the island. Jacob could obviously leave or project himself.

I thought the reason the bomb didn't vaporize the island was because the Island absorbed the energy.

I too would like to know about the origins of the stone 'cork', the lighthouse, the temple, the statue etc. But on the other hand if all that is explained it takes away some of the mystery of the island so I'm torn.

I agree the ending was satisfying enough in terms of the characters but the island is still a mystery.

Now who doesn't want to see the "Adventures of Hurley and Linus"?
                    Better late than never.....

I enjoyed the finale. To me, it featured what ultimately made the show a success, the characters.

All the characters finding some sort of peace was a nice happy ending. I guess that's what we all ultimately hope for no matter what beliefs each of us have in the end.

Jack's death scene was perfect, Sawyer and Juliet's reunion scene was great. So was Locke and Ben's coming to terms. Hurley's role was fitting. He was everyone's best friend. Again, a whole lot to like.

But, the creators ending the show with the same answer for all the questions about the Island that Job got from God for all his afflictions — basically," I don't answer to you and who are you to question me," — makes what the finale got right so much less satisfying to me.

What it said to me is that the creators had a very vague ending destination in mind during the first couple of seasons but no real explanations for all the weird crap going on, on the island.

But again, while I found the weird stuff interesting and intriguing, the characters and their interactions are what made the show go from the very beginning, and the creators serviced them in finale. That made the finale good to me but incomplete.

Yeah, the adventures of Hurley and Ben would be great, an update of Fantasy Island, perhaps. I wouldn't mind seeing Sawyer and his partner in a cop show, either.

It's been a rough day for me. I tried to stay away from the internet as best I could, because I didn't want the negative reaction to affect my experience of the finale, but it was impossible. I don't mind the anger or disappointment that real fans feel, it's the people that stopped watching three years ago who go out of their way to diss a show they know nothing about. The suggestion that anyone wasted 6 years of their lives watching this is ludicrous and insulting. But after all these years I still take internet snarkiness personally, it's a problem.

I really, really love the characters in this show. The finale was a wonderful farewell to all of them, I was wiping away tears all through the last hour, it was great. That wonderful musical theme has been on a loop in my head ever since. Each awakening in the Sideways world was a beautiful goose pimply catharsis. The creators made their point most clearly that for them it's about the characters, not the mythology and by that standard it was a huge triumph.

The Island adventure in the finale was character driven, I loved the great showdown between Locke and Jack--the conversation when they first met and Jack said he'd kill him was fantastic. I loved the scene between them when they lowered Desmond into the light--"You disrespect John Locke by wearing his face". Jack was AWESOME in the last half of this season.

Ben was great, I knew that walkie talkie would come back to save the day. I'm glad he got his redemption--but he has a lot to atone for, my God. He's gonna have to stay in SW for a long time giving Rousseau foot rubs to make up for all that he pulled.

Of course Hurley stayed behind, how could it be otherwise? I was surprised that he and Ben stayed on the Island and presumably ruled for years, because Darlton said they wouldn't leave an opening for Lost Part 2. I can see Lost having expanded universe novels or comics in the future like they did with Trek and Star Wars. There's literally thousands of years of Island adventures you could create. We could be rounding out this mythology for the next 50 years.

There is no doubt that they left a LOT of holes in Lost. They had plenty of time this season to touch on some of the big nagging questions...but they didn't... I don't know why that DOESN'T bother me. I understand why it bothers a lot of people, and it saddens me to think that for some of them the whole experience has been ruined. I just accept it and am happy with what they gave me, and for me it was a very rich experience I wish I could articulate better, but the internet is full of brilliant writing about Lost, so I don't have to.

Some great things have been posted here, by the way, thank you. I really loved the ride, I loved checking in on this thread and posting bad theories and lame speculation.

After rewatching, I have to agree....If it truly was all about the characters and not the mythology then they did their job and did the characters a great service with that finale. But after 6 years of mysteries and secrets I was hoping for more reveals.

The dialogue 'tween Jack and MIB/Locke was indeed awesome...I was just looking for a little more of His Royal Smokiness instead of an old man getting kicked down a hill It seemed anti-climatic in a way, after all the build-up they've given "The Monster" over the years and the build-up this season alone they gave to his MIB/Locke incarnation...Just seemed too easy of a way for him to go out like that. I kept waiting on the edge of my set for a Freddy Krueger like comeback but everytime they looked his body was still there....

The Bomb did serve a purpose - it got them from 1977 to the present, and possibly stopped the event in the 70s, allowing Dharma to contain the energies they had unwittingly unleashed and build the station that Desmond ended up in around the breach.

I think as long as the Dharma stations were being manned and operational. The Dharma initiative would still drop food. Also, there was a way from one of the stations (the Flame) to schedule a drop via a computer code.

I'm not sure what to make of the Island being underwater in SW. The bomb was a red herring in the SW world, but I am glad that it didn't re-set everything in real time.
