This is why I want someone to tell us why there are rules and how they're enforced. It's still not clear to me that it's not just choice whether to follow the 'rules', whatever they are, rather than some kind of magical constraints on behavior. But then how is it that Richard couldn't kill himself? This feels like a fundamental question that needs answering, but I don't have high confidence that it will be.

Well, I think there's a difference between Jacob/MIB's rules and Ben/Widmore's rules, like one is metaphysical and one is a gentlemen's agreement.

        ?

I dunno. Widmore broke the rules when he went off Island and had a child...but Jacob left the Island. Mr. Friendly and Alpert left the Island. When and why did the Other's branch out to the real world? There's so much about them we will never know.

I was thinking Jack is gonna buy it in the finale and Sawyer will take over and become king of the island and get to keep that wonderfully bodascious bootycall he has in Kate

I wondering if Ben is conning Smokey. He knows he can't kill Whidmore, so he can shoot him and earn Smokey's trust... perhaps even (ironically) "saving" Whidmore in the process.

After all the work they have done the past several eps to redeem Ben (Michael Emerson is such an amazing actor, btw)... it would be very poor writing to just suddenly undo it all now. So I'm hoping there is more to it.

If there's one thing Ben does well, it's betray. So yeah, I think Ben will ultimately sacrifice himself to help kill Smokey.

Like Ben said in Season Two.... "We're the Good Guys"....so in the end, yeah I think he'll be a hero...seems to be one already in the Sideways world and it was only circumstance on Island world that caused him to be "evil"...which I think MIB had something to do with, manipulating Ben whenever he had the chance along the way...

His comment last night that the Monster was summoning him...I don't think Ben likes being played.

No he doesn't I've often wondered exactly HOW Ben learned about summoning the Monster...after all, his house is located directly over that little drain he used....and come to think about it, before that house was Ben's it belonged to someone in the Dharma Initiative...so maybe that person knew how to summon the Monster too.

There's a LOT that's still not explained as far as HOW Dharma knew that the sonic pylons would keep back Smokey...somebody must've told them. Richard? Jacob?

And for some reason, last season Ben felt the need to be judged by Smokey...Who told him that was even an option?

                    Arrrrgh! My brain hurts!

That was one of these set-ups that echo or mirror things that've happened on the island, here echoing that Jacob and MIB can't kill each other. (Another "echo" from this season is Claire becoming the "new" Rousseau - baby stolen, going crazy in the jungle & heavily armed).

I know Jack is the new guardian but will he still be at the end of the finale? Wouldn't it be more appropriate/symmetrical if it were Kate? A woman - Janney's unnamed character, "mother" to Jacob & MIB - was guardian at the start, why not at the end? Additionally Jack (Jacob?) was a waay too obvious choice.

Maybe they'll ALL get killed by Smokey (and/or Ben) and one of the doppelgangers from sideways land - all also candidates? - will be the new guardian (maybe sideways Locke or Ben).

Ooooh! (listening to podcasts again....) Alex was buried. MIB impersonated her to Ben in the Temple. Therefore--burying bodies does NOT prevent Smokie from assuming their form as many of us thought.

I used to think that just as long as the body was on island, he could impersonate them....BUT Isabella's appearance to Richard on the Black Rock totally blew that theory out of the water. More than likely, as long as he can get a fix on you and read your mind, he can impersonate those dearly departed that mean the most to you...

Regarding Sideways Ben, I thought that was a really nice moment when Rousseau acknowledged that he was the closest thing to a father that Alex had.

I keep wanting Sideways to be the happy ending everyone is looking for.

That's my hope too. In the original timeline, even if they "win", it will be at best a bittersweet ending. Too many people are already dead, lives ruined, and so forth. But the flash sideways seems like a chance to give those characters (and us, the audience) a happier ending as well.

I'm still not quite sure how the two worlds will align in the finale, but I have faith that the flash sideways will all payoff in the end.
