It's entertainment. Isn't that the whole point of going to the movies, to be entertained?
I will happily buy my ticket, sit down and watch it and if it stinks, at least I gave it a shot. Not all movies appeal to me so I do decide once in awhile to wait for them on DVD. Sometimes I am glad I did and every so often I wished I had taken a chance and watched it at the theaters. But there are some films like Star Trek, 2012 and Avatar as recent examples that you just know good or bad you MUST see them on the big screen first.
Anyone who allows some "reviewer" and their own personal opinion to help determine if you will go and see a movie is pretty sad IMO
I remember when the Disney movie The Black Hole got terrible reviews and my Dad said he guess he didn't want to see it based on that. I still wanted to see it really bad so he caved and we went anyway. He said afterwards "I don't know what the reviewers saw but I liked it." I liked it too and though it was a bit odd at times with a funky religious over toned ending I was still so glad I saw it on the big screen, even today. I think Avatar will be the same situation. Whether it is awesome, borderline great or just a good or ok film it is one I want to see on the big screen for myself and be able to judge it and make a decision about it on my own.
If you think the clips shown as previews on other shows don't look quite right, your right they don't. This is a massive 3D CGI movie that was made to be seen on a big wide movie screen, not squashed on a small broadcast/cable/satelite TV preview screen like that. They are meant as just that, "previews", so you can get a basic idea of what the movie looks like. They simply can't give you the full experience of the full screen 3D wide versions like you will see on a wide screen large movie screen. When they port it over for DVD it will be better prepared for the smaller screen format so for now the few previews they are showing on Letterman, etc will look a little choppy and not as colorful.
I am no Jim Cameron fan or anything like that, but it is people like Cameron, Lucas, Spielberg, Bay, Jackson, Abrams and others who help to constantly push the film envelope which we as movie goers will only reap the benefits from.

It IS; but I'd also think reviewers would be leary of giving it a neg since it looks like it's gonna be a hit. (There's a review on Cracked.com that kinda smacks of that. "It's bad; but it's good....")

Yeah. I really don't care about the effects; good or bad. I'd prefer something that had some new ideas, instead of the old ones done a little better.

One weird thing I've noticed in the last decade or so; when folks discuss movies you almost never see them talk about the characters in any kind of prevalent way. So.... when I saw Star Wars I thought "Hanw as cool when he shot that alien guy, and Luke blew up the Death Star!" But when folks talk about movies today you almost never hear characters referred to by name. (It's always "the hero" or "Bloggins McHearthrob's character.") And you never hear "The overbase was SO Cool!" It's always "and the overbase took seventy-thousand animators fifty zillion years to make and represents a huge advance in cell count....")

THAT bothers me 'cos it knocks you out of the film's reality before you even SEE it!

Bought my ticket last night for this Saturday. I not real jazzed for this movie, I'm mostly going to see it because a group of my friends want to get together and go see it. They're totally hyped for it.

I'm like you guys, when I finally saw the trailer a couple of months ago, I was underwhelmed. It just looked like a video game advertisment to me.

But while I don't think this will be a great movie (can't see myself going more than once or buying it on DVD), I don't get the impression that it's going to totally suck either. This dosen't look like a Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen mess to me. Hope I'm not wrong. I think I'll get my $11 worth of entertainment.

I liked Abyss, too.
The scene in the sub where the woman has to drown first, only to be reanimated later, was some very good acting and tension building.

I guess the only letdown was the ending, which was a bit "soft".

Agreed.

I like the director's cut better...you get to see the thousand foot tidal wave about to hit the city...but then the water dudes reverse the effect.

The more I see of Avatar, its "influences" are indeed becoming obvious.
The mecha from Robotech.
The soldiers from Aliens.
The spaceships (with the vertical turbines) from Terminator.
The "look" from Roger Dean artwork.

And the more you realize that the inspiration came from someone elses imagination, the more it feels "not right". In other cases, he seems to be cannibalizing his older work.
In such a hugely expensive movie that took forever to make, you kind of expect something fresh.

If you want to get picky with comparisons, compare the story idea to "Star Trek: Insurrection"

I'm watching it tomorrow with Ashton in IMAX 3-D. He's the only one that wants to see it, and since nobody else is coming along, I'm splurging. When I first saw the preview months ago, I was underwhelmed too. Not expecting much, and I can't really take a powernap since I'll be responsible for Ashton...
