Boo hoo. We didn't make it. We were in San Francisco, bought tickets etc...but then the sold me the wrong tickets. I said I wanted IMAX 3D, they gave us tix for 3D digital. BIG DIFFERENCE! So I got a refund and purchased tickets to see the Princess and the Frog. If I see this movie, it has to be in IMAX 3D. We'll try again in a few weeks. I've been hearing rave reviews.

You did the right thing, Jessica.

That's the whole point of this movie...to watch it on IMAX 3D.

Agreed, this movie must be seen on a huge screen and in 3D. Otherwise you will miss out on the details and the feel of being immersed in the movie. Pandora is simply amazing and very well done. The details are just amazing. I tend to notice things off to the side and couldn't believe how much work they put into simultaneous movements that created realism.
Watching this on a small screen and not 3D wouldn't give the full effect.

Looks like James Cameron doesn't need my $12. If you factor in foreign box office, the movie pretty much broke even this weekend.

...and that's despite the interruption of the big East Coast snowstorm...it still made lots of domestic money.

The snow will melt...expect legs on Avatar...but I don't know if it will catch Transformers 2...but we shall see:

Not yet, in order to break even a movie typically has to earn back 3X it's cost to break even, in order to cover it's promotion and other stuff.

So does this movie have anything to do with the cartoon?

I think it has to do with a videogame or some kind of game. Avatar the cartoon is going to be called The Last Airbender when it comes out....or something like that.

That's what I thought when I first saw previews. I did the Joan Rivers thing and went "aaack aacck" when I saw the blue people.

I am aware but it's a pretty damned good sign when the movie recoupes production costs in three days, this isn't exactly a "Saw" movie budget.

Exactly, IMAX 3-D is the way to go with this movie. By The Way, How was the "the Princess and the Frog"? My daughter is so eagerly wanting to see Disney's latest animation.

160 million? That's about half the budget. You then have to take the 160 and split it between studio and theater. And this is without including advertising and marketing costs which are huge. It opens in Japan today or tomorrow, so that should make a dent, but Fox has a few weeks before breaking even.

I watched a boot of Avatar this evening. I will definitely go to see it again at the IMAX on Christmas Day! I thought it was pretty damn good.
