Avatar - Will you see this $300 mill production?

Nope. That is not a typo. This movie is reported to cost $300 million to make. The most expensive movie of all time. Sound familiar for James Cameron? Yeah he did that before with Titanic. He gambled and won handsomely. But some reports are suggesting he may have fallen off the deepside with this one. See the report below. So, who here is interested in seeing the film? I'm only modestly curious, only because of the effects. The subject matter itself seems less interesting to me. But it's James Cameron, so I think I'll give it a shot.

It looks interesting......I really haven't paid much attention to the commericals.I catch a bit then run off to do something. What got me was the toys at McDonalds on friday my son got the some blue looking character.Well it has a on switch in the back and its voice/sound activated so it body glows bright blue.I thought that was a pretty cool toy....so need to take my son to watch.

I can't even fake interest, it just doesn't appeal to me mostly because it looks like a big CGI cartoon. I am not fond of the designs either, just does nothing for me. That said, I'll likely watch the kids as the wife and her parents go see this, they seem interested.

That article is mainly a piece on what a wanker James Cameron is.

'Why should we care about blue people?' asked one critic. Another found the film 'a bit preachy about the environment'.

More worryingly for Cameron, the 3D effects, which are supposed to mean that Avatar is the 'first film of the future', left several viewers feeling nauseous. 'I definitely would not eat before seeing the film,' one told me.
That is the closet to a review in the whole piece and considering the whole build-up...(James Cameron is a dick....hate him and his movie), I am not surprised that they didn't quote anyone who gave a thumbs-up.

I really don't have any interest in seeing the movie, aside from the visuals. However, if word of mouth is good enough, I'd probably consider going.

By the way, it is pulling a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment.
Avatar Movie Reviews, Pictures - Rotten Tomatoes

And this is a review from someone who was fully prepared to hate the movie and had been on record as being very cynical of the movie ahead of its release.

All those worries are completely justified. There's hardly a single moment of truly original story telling up on the screen. The characters are developed exactly as you think they will be and key moments at the climax of the movie are sign posted clearly early on. If you think you've already seen James Cameron's Avatar then there's a good chance you're right.

              And none of that matters.

I'm seeing it again on an IMAX screen in a few weeks and I can hardly wait.

I have heard the movie's 3d is amazing and if word of mouth continues in that direction, people will see it.

Getting off track, that UK article has one big flaw:

Born in Kapuskasing near Niagara Falls in Canada

That's like saying I was born near New York City, Kap is easily ten hours drive from Niagara Falls.

I just can't get into the hype, the storyline doesn't interest me and I'm truly sick of all the CGI replacing good acting. Maybe when it comes to cable if it's between that and Golden Girls.

I'm not a fan of James Cameron

Seems like I don't like most of the stuff he's done after Aleins

I think it looks really cool and I plan on goint to see it. however, with how busy I usually am at this time of year I may not get a chance to see it before it's out on bluray.

By the way I have seen some articles that say the cost to make this movie was actally upwards of 500 million

I have read nothing in prep of the film I am only basing my opinons on the massive media campaign and trailers I can't seem to get away from (incl the long one during football)

The basic plot is a rip off of hondo or pillars in the sky - soldier is supposed to befriend the natives and find their weakness and ends up joining the natives. The "twist" is the sci fi bit where the lead is actually one of the natives physically - eh. The visuals are too cartoony for me. I just don't like these green screen films. The only one i can remotely enjoy is SIN CITY becuase the comic was so visually extreme, and watchmen becuase it's a great story first. So no this one won't get my money and I don't know if I would even rent it.

It's aparantly on the cusp of moving out of PG-13 into NC-17 for intense violence and "sexuality' not sure if that means alien make out time or what but for those whose kids like the toys in the happy meal better pre screen it.

I am going to wait it out and see what others think first.

I have seen the trailers and the extended shows on the Discovery channel or whatever it's on and haven't been impressed.

You can throw all the special effects you want at a movie but if the story sucks....well it isn't going to do well. I want to hear if the movie is good plot wise before I plunk down $11 or $12 to go see it in 3-D.
