It was basically 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with a weird ending ala 2001: A Space Odyssey. Some like it a lot, others found it dull...I found the toys way more exciting than the movie was. It had the same problem Star Trek: The Motion Picture had....it lost its way when somebody decided to make it a "cerebral thriller". Being a huge Trek nut, I love TMP despite this flaw. Black Hole...I can take it or leave it.
( Maybe if I had that Cygnus command bridge playset I would have been more keen on it as a kid??)"Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

>I wonder what the reasoning is behind making another.
Name recognition. Look how much "buzz" the movie gets on these boards. And we are not alone on the internets. Hell; there were them Kubricks that came out a few years back. To a producer anything known; especially this much, is worth perusing a LOT more than something nobody's ever heard of. Hence making "Asteroids," "Monopoly" and "Viewmaster" movies.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with it. I grew up with the movie and all the related merchandise so I like as much for nostalgia as much as anything. If the new one is good, great; it it's not, no big loss, the original wasn't exactly super-fantastic.
There are some things I really liked about the original. Thought the casting was great (although Perkins seems a bit too creepy to play a "good guy", sorry I always see Norman), really like the design of the movie, especially the Cygnus both inside and out, music was good although the "heroic" music is a bit too slow for action music.
But the movie is hecka slow. And while I'm o.k. with the original, sorry Mike, I gotta disagree, they gotta do something about that ending.
As far as redesigning the robots, as long as they look cool I'm alright. I mean, the original robots are nice but not exactly iconic designs. We're not talking Darth Vader or Creature from the Black Lagoon. I wonder if Vincent and Bob will even be in it. I noticed in the article the made a point to mention the Maxamillion will be back, but not mention of the other robots.Comment

I liked the original movie a lot but the music was amazing.
The soundtrack is a must have.
It will be interesting to see how good or bad the remake is. If the remakes of War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still are any indication of what we can expect then *Yikes* look out :(Capt. Kirk: "Is there anyone on this ship, who even remotely, looks like Satan?"
Mr. Spock: "I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain"
Capt. Kirk: "No, Mr. Spock, I didn't think you would be"Comment

Actually I think a re-make can be better. The original ending was too confusing. I think something less hallucinagenic and more scientific would be an improvement. I don't think they will do a better job but if someone came along who had a good angle on the story they could make something more out of it. If this gets the green light they're going to change everything. Don't expect anything to look the same. This re-make is probably motivated by some strange idea that they would make tons of money. I doubt that will work.Comment

Part of the fun of an ending like the Black Hole is discussing it with your friends after seeing it... and everyone usually has a different interpretation.Last edited by Mikey; Dec 3, '09, 10:26 PM.Comment

whether the remake is good or bad, at least it will probably get the original out on blu ray.Comment

I am watching the Anchor Bay 1998 widescreen release at the moment its a good film .maybe its time for a remake not reimagined thats crap! If its being done by the guys who are working on Tron 2 Legacy at the moment its in good hands .this wont happen for another 2 to 3 years though if it happens at all?Last edited by kennermike; Dec 7, '09, 3:15 PM.Comment

Odd thing is, I was in a check out line and picked up the little disney mag they put out for kids a few months ago. I flipped through it and found a comic section. They had reprinted the comicbook version of Black Hole and serialized it into the magazine. Maybe they were prepping a new audience for the upcoming remake.
PS The link listed at the start of this thread stated a sequeal to Tron was to be out by Christmas. *** How did I miss that and where the heck is it!!!!!Comment

I thought the original was a good try, but ultimately not a successful film (the movie itself, not its earnings). If they do a remake, i hope they remove the juvenile aspects (okay, the robots were cute but I want my sci-fi to be darker and more realistic). As a sci-fi fan, I hope the movie makes a ton of money. As long as sci fi movies continue to perform well, they will keep making more. And that is a win for all of us sci fi junkies!___________________________________

Problem with the original was the three main heroes were bland.
It was slow paced because it was suppossed to be a haunted house in space.
I liked the ending. It left me thinking.
Movies today dont even want you to start thinking.
Besides they will cahnge it around to appeal to the teenage female market.
After Lost in Space , which was a dark parody of everything the original was , I just dont care about remakes.
Why remakes?
No one wants to risk a new idea. Too much money to be had.
