The pack-in comics had a darker tone as well... and those are probably closer to how I "played He-Man". But if you are going to adapt MOTU, your North Star has to be the Filmation cartoon.

To be fair, the core class movie Teela is nicer in person. But, yeah, still the weakest figure in the first two waves. I think it's the hair piece that does it. Too much forehead showing. There is a core Teela coming with her hair up in traditional Teela style that looks nicer.You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. Yeah the mini comics setting is my preferred He-Man world too. Though it did have it's goofy moments too like He-Man's harness being powered by batteries lol. But even as a kid, i recognized how the cartoon took all that I liked in the mini comics and made it quite uncool. Still don't care for the show but i pretty much have to accept that to most people that IS He-Man, even more than the toys.Comment

It's nice to have motu fans that prefer the early mini comics but are still not over the top anti-Filmation. There is a vocal small minority of MOTU fans that take their hatred of the cartoon to foaming at the mouth burning levels of rage. It's refreshing to not to have to deal with that here.
I like the mini comics too. There's really no version of MOTU I hate. I don't even hate the NA cartoon or the 87 movie and I still have to admit, they're not great.
I think sometimes people forget what a global phenomenon the cartoon was. It was getting absolutely insane ratings. Beating network TV shows at a time when the big three networks ruled the airwaves. It was the cartoon that launched MOTU toy sales into the stratosphere and made it the enduring pop cultural icon it is to this this today. I will never say which version of MOTU is the best. That's an individual thing. But there's no denying the cartoon version is the most popular and iconic version. When most people think of He-Man and Skeletor they remember the cartoon and John Erwin and Alan Oppenheimer voicing them. I agree 100%. I love the Filmation show...but even as a kid, I could tell they filed the teeth down quite a bit with the cartoon, especially based on those early Don Glut/Alfredo Alcala comics.
But yeah, there were kids I knew who didn't have one single MOTU toy but still talked about it on the playground every day. I had an accident as a kid and had to have my ear sewn back together. What did the doctor and I talk about? He-Man. His kid watched it too.Comment
