I don't mind the Movie so Much...
I do Understand All the "Hate".
It's Funny,.. I just watched Fan Boys..., They illude to a lot of the Hate with the Movie...
I for the Most part Coulda Lived without Jar Jar as Well,.. No Problem with Anikan,.. & Feel Portman's Acting was more Terrible than Jar Jar's BS . But really did enjoy what the Rest of the Film Had to Offer.
All in All,.. I liked the Movie Somewhat..., but when It did come out,.. I believe I was More So Jazzed About all the New Star Wars Toys... It was right before I re-Discovered Mego,.. & I personally Hadn't collected anything in Yrs.... , Since the BTAS ... It Started the Madness All Over....... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. The 1st Knight in Customs.
always trading for Hot Toys Figures .Comment

It makes me think how little of this triliogy was plotted ahead of time and it was really all hot off the presses. They should'a had so many hints and sub-plots regarding Qui-Gon's attmpts to contact the living or at least saved his death for Ep II. They should'a inserted a ghostly Qui-Gon at the end the double-special edition of ROTJ. Instead they inserted Hayden Christensen into that ghostly dead Jedi scene. Maybe Lucas could've also inserted Carl Weathers as Chubbs Peterson, Abraham Lincoln and an alligator.Last edited by johnmiic; May 24, '09, 12:31 PM.Comment

I actually felt numb on opening day after I saw THE PHANTOM MENACE. To me, it didn't quite feel like a STAR WARS film, and I felt like there was some departure from the STAR WARS formula.
Like Hector, I initially had a strong reaction to the accents of the Gungan's and Nemoidian's dialogue, feeling that they were somewhat inappropriate for STAR WARS and "borderline racist". But then I quickly realized that the use of dialects / accents was actually quite commonplace in the Original Trilogy, and none of us had an issue with them back then.
That's because the accents / dialects used were (for the most part) anglo-based.
See, in our culture, we have all become so accustomed to Anglo /european-based accents in films as being "the norm", and all other dialects / accents as having a "special use".
All Imperial characters in the OT sounded British. This was intended to audibly create an "arrogant" / "aristocratic" connotation. Was that "racist"? The Rebel Troops in the OT all sounded American. This was to create a connotation of "good". Was this shades of our own prejudice, perhaps? Other dialects / accents were used in the OT as well, with little to no reaction from fans:
The Ewoks of RETURN OF THE JEDI all spoke variations of an old Asian dialect to sound "primitive".
In A NEW HOPE, Greedo spoke a South American Incan dialect known as Cechuan because of how alien and "otherworldly" it sounded.
Lando's co-pilot in EP VI (Nein Numb) spoke an African dialect (and he even wore a funny leather hat and had large lips).
More "racism"?
Taking these things into account, I quickly came to realize that in a galaxy as huge and multi-cultured as the STAR WARS universe, there is NO dialect or accent that is "inappropriate' or "un-acceptable". That type of thinking is probably a by-product of my own "Earthly" hang-ups and prejudices.
With subsequent viewings, Episode I grew on me more and more.
There are some problems with the film, to be sure. But generally, I think it was really well-made and epic.

When it came out on VHS, my wife bought it because she liked the fight at the end. I taped an epsiode of "Justice League" over it a couple of years later at her request.
Now my son wants to see it, he asked me last night actually and it feels weird to go and rent a movie I hate.
you told him it was a train wreck.
it is human nature.
we must stop to see.Comment

Amen, brother.
I'll even go one step further:
I always ask folks who hate Episode I to tell me how many theatrical viewings of the film they attended.
They virtually always admit to attending more than one viewing. Occasionally, they even admit to attending more than two or three viewings!
And then, taking things yet aother step further, when you ask them if they own the film on DVD home video, a surprisingly high percentage of these folks actually do !
I'd say that's not too shabby for a movie that everyone hates.Last edited by darklord1967; May 25, '09, 12:14 PM.I... am an action figure customizerComment
