Yeah, from what I understand, the classic Trek Time line still officially exists unaltered. Besides, if it didn't, "Prime Spock" would have no memories of it and he would probably cease to exist as well. So, it's an alternate or parallel timeline co-existing with the original one.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return... -
Well, in the story it is specifically quoted as "An Alternate Reality." In Hollywood it is a reboot, because we all know that until this incarnation runs its course, Paramount will probably not go back to designs and character histories and such of the original series or TNG. I am interested in what will come of the novels and comics and such will they still run TOS stories along with the new, original character stories. I don't see why not.
But here is another reason why forcing an alternate reality as opposed to a simple changed time line is needed. If it is just altered history, then the new production team is a bit stuck on room to tell new stories. If the only thing in the time line drastically changed was the fate of the Kelvin (and the subsequent changes that snowballed from that in the Federation), then there will still be a time when the Doomsday Machine waltzes into the galaxy or V'Ger or the whale probe. Abrams probably does not want to do different takes on these, so if it is a parallel uni with a changed timeline rather than just a corruption of the original Kirk and Picard line, they don't have to worry about those threats having to be tackled as stories. It's all good!Comment

I FINALLY got to see it today. It lived up to the word of mouth and hype. I know others have said it here, but it does indeed feel like "real" Star Trek is back. The cast actually pulled of the impossible. I don't think they will ever replace the original crew, but they do a fine job portraying these characters. Fantastic job by all involved. Pine and Quinto really nailed it in my mind. The guy playing Bones seemed to mimic Kelly more, but he made it work and brought much needed human humor to the movie, and that's Bones.
Nimoy was great, and some of his lines gave me chills. Some of the things they did in this movie really surprised me, but it all made sense to the story. The only thing I'm iffy on is Spock and Uhura, but I can deal. Spock has new issues to deal with now.

It's a great film to jumpstart a new line of fans. My sister absolutely loved it, and usually her reaction is, "meh." to such things. To the point where she actually BORROWED some DVDs that I had of TOS so she could "relive" Trek.
I loved the special effects, so great to see it on the big screen.
It's the kind of movie that is needed to pump some action into something that was flatlining. Those who look outside dream. Those who look within awake.

I think you did chime in on my Trek Fan Thread Count thread but I didn't know you were that much of a Trek fan. Someone else mentioned you were the best Uhura at conventions.
Do you have a picture? I'm all curious now. A wig and everything.
I never was able to get a proper uniform for the 2-3 conventions I went to. I'm going to guess you have a TOS costume and not a movie-era one?
And I should post elsewhere but I just saw this yesterday with my son and another fan and I will say that I think I could give Type 1 Kirk a run for his money on the Old School track.
My son's name is James. Trek got me into Megos as you all know. I got a degree in Film to do this movie... as you may have noticed on my movie thread.
And I haven't read this entire thread (I stopped on pg 6 or 7 and jumped to the back to see that it is currently 12 pages long and started skimming backward to here...) but I will also say that I have 2-3 reservations about the movie, but with some of the interviews... I've now read about the movie, I have to say it is Very Good.
It was very well done. My objections are with some of the story decisions that were made. But mostly it was well done. Well researched. Respectful. An homage. Well written (mostly). And very exciting.
I suspected from the trailers that it might be a Good movie but not a good Trek movie.
But it is better than DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. God help us all.
It is right in there with TWOK. It has to rank behind TWOK because it is new and in a different League.
TWOK was it for the "Pre-Abrams" era.
This movie should not be as good as the Sequel if they have a good story. I was really disappointed with... well, there is a thread on all that. I may get into it later.
Anyway, someone show me the thread where Type1Kirk (man, I'm also a Type 2 Mego person, I may have to concede to Mike on hard-coreness) is all hard-core against this.
I just saw the movie on Fri 6.6.08. I didn't go see it at the Imax. I didn't go to opening weekend. I "sat out" the first $200Million. I didn't want to contribute to any "hysteria" or help out the movie. So I waited on purpose until it was just a logical time for me to go.
And I got my money back after I saw it but that is another story.
So as my buddy told me, I "still don't count for the box office numbers."
It was good. It was better than I thought. It was REALLY GOOD as I Watched it. It takes some damage if you reflect on it.
Sort of like First Contact. But First Contact, while fun to watch, just Trampled Cannon so much that I hate the movie now.
This movie (is it just called Star Trek?) is Fun to watch. With a crowd is probably best. And it should hold up OK. Go see it. Go see it at the $1.00 movie theatre if you have one. But see it in the theatre before it goes away if you have any interest. See it with a crowd. I hope Mike does this also because his fact-based opinion will be good.
I wasn't going to see it at all, but my son, James, sort of wanted to go. And my buddy was all into giving JJ a wide berth and he and my son are friends, so we went, as I said, after the first $200million and I even got all of us a refund actually so it was very poetically satisfying the way it worked out.
I imagine, because I have other friends and relatives interested in it, that I will go see it at least one more time. I saw TWOK 6times in a row on opening day. I have not seen another Trek movie in the theatre more than once since STIV.
I didn't mean to write so much of a review but I thought as the newest post I should say something.
Jessica, post a convention pic if you would. Thanks.-
