Do prequels rob us of our memories and imagination ?

Like Yoda "sensing much fear" in young Anni. Fear of WHAT?!?! The
kid almost singlehandedly ends the war!

Not fear of "flying"---not fear of "war" (his strengths are that he ISN'T afraid
of THOSE things)----
it's fear of LOSS (his mother at this point)
----that's the character's MAIN flaw throughout the prequels---so if Yoda's
word's aren't appropriate, then I don't know WHAT is.

And nobody noticing Palpatine was evil? That seemed kinda odd too.

Yoda has dialogue in TPM that clearly explains that the Dark Side is hard to detect.

In addition "evil" or "The Devil" throughout history has a reputation as being
simillarly sly---so it makes perfect sense to me that the Dark Side is so
elusive to detect---in the context of classic "myth" anyway.

You know, in 1973 Warner Brother released a film Directed by William Friedkin that became a national sensation. That film was The Excorsist.

I'm old enough to remember how the news media was filled with stories about how there were people fainting, and passing out in movie theaters all over the country from how horrified they were watching this film.

People were having major hysterics, and, in some cases, were having to be carried away on stretchers and in ambulances.

FLASH FORWARD to the year 2000. My wife and I went (on opening night) to see the re-vival of The Excorsist that was released nation-wide with additional footage. The capaticty-packed auditorium was full of first-time viewers of the film as well as old-timers (like us) who were familiar with this classic and wanted to see it on the big-screen.

Judging by the amount of LAUGHTER (not giggles... LAUGHTER) that we heard throughout that film that night, you'd have thought we were watching a slapstick COMEDY.

I felt like I was in a fever dream.

This is a film that depicts the brutal, vile violation and possession of a 12 year old little girl by a vicious demon... It graphically chronicles the torture that this despicable personality joyfully inflicts upon this child, her mother, and those that care for her.

And the modern, cynical audience THOUGHT IT WAS A LAUGH RIOT.

That's how far we've come. Very sad.

You saw the re release with a dud audience. I saw the movie 2 or 3 times in 2000 and the audience reactions were not laughter. In fact the spider walk scene got some real gasps.

The other stuff that had been seen for years did not get "gasp" except in one audience where there were more than a few that never saw the movie before. But there was no laughter I remember in inappropriate moments.

But your other points are extremely well taken.

And about prequels destroying what you had envisioned. I would think it would be an issue of you remembering what you had imagined and what the world got to see in a prequel. You don't get robbed of your version because there is a different (even if it's "official") version of it that comes later.

To get back to the whole Obi-wan Anakin ROTS battle....first off, George Lucas made all these films (6)by connecting the dots.He tried to make everything fit.Some things did and some things didn't.With clone wars he's filling in the holes.
So with that said....Obi-wan called Anakin his brother, his best friend when in fact he felt Anakin was a son.Yoda knew Obi-wan wasn't strong enough to defeat the emperor so he had no choose but send Obi-wan to deal with Anakin , hoping he could do the job.The battle was one of skill.The first one to make a mistake would lose,neither one really wanted to kill the other deep down in their hearts.Put yourself in Obi-wan's shoes,knowing how he felt about Anakin..the profacy..He was okay with "that" he wasn't the one to kill Anakin and probably ruin the profacy..Well Yoda failed so Anakin was a moot point for the time being.
Now jump to ROTJ...the emperor(being the one who killed his master) knew that Darth Vader was the only one powerful enough to have a shot of defeating him.Thats why he held him close and always treated him as a father,but Luke was a wild card.He had the potential of becoming stronger than his father.So he pit Vader and Luke against each other.Knowing he would have control over the victor,a win win for him.Now remember in the prequels how Obi-wan said Anakin"never let him down and won't now"Now remember at the end of ROTJ how Obi-wan put his hand on Yoda's shoulder as Anakin returned to the light side.To me that said "I told you he wouldn't let me down,it just took him time"
To me this just pulled all the movies together.So to get back to "do prequels rob us....."when they bring every thing together ..I don't think so but when they screw stuff up ....probably.

Firstly thanks for taking the time to read all of my long, rambling posts (and NOT coming to the conclusion that I am some "frightening" or "Scary" George Lucas "groupie". I honestly do not consider myself such, and I feel that the STAR WARS films (all 6 of them) are NOT perfect.

But I DO find them to be VERY, VERY entertaining... each in their own unique way, and yet stylistically consistent with one another.

Secondly, I want to thank you for understanding what it is that I'm trying to say as I make the connections between how films like these are viewed through the changed emotional climate of our modern culture.
