I didn't climb on board TNG until the Borg two parter with Picard.

Prior to that I saw part of the first season and though it was dumb as bricks... up to an including The Planet of the Polygamous Cat-fighting Black People, and The Planet of the Blonde Nymphos. Which I understand were Roddenberry leftovers from previous iterations of Trek?

Is that the one where they want to kill Wesley because he tripped over some line ?

If so, that was one of the most stupidest episodes ever

Another stupid one is the one where they're trapped in the casino

It's hard to pin this down a little more accurately, or put it clearer. I dont know if its because so many of the original folks worked on the first season, or if it's due to so much of the pre-work on Phase II was adapted into the original TNG writers guide...The crappy sets maybe...Not sure, but it just feels more like a cousin to the original series. The other seasons, and other series, were more like second cousins.

You pretty much summed up my feelings on Season 1.

              Sounds like a SEINFELD episode

I don't remember a lot of the episodes you guys are talking about.
I was a pretty decent STNG fan, but I only caught on about S4
and never really came across too many S1 eps in syndication.

Man I totally agree. The first season was terrible. I still hate the Wesley Character to this day.

TNG is to ST:TOS what Famous Covers is to Mego. A good attempt, mildly entertaining, but not the real deal.

I've watched 'em all, I'm a Trekkie. But TNG is very late '80s, without the patina of nostalgia & innovation to brighten it. With it, Trek became a franchise/product.

I think you just can't top the original Kirk (Action)/Spock(Intellect)/McCoy(Emotion) triad. As I get older, it's McCoy I really appreciate.

And on a personal note, it always ticked me off that the supposedly "improved, politically-correct" TNG didn't suggest gay relationships on board. We could have symbiotic relationships & hermaphoditic aliens, but evidently showing two same-sex crew members walking down a corridor off-duty holding hands or chatting in 10-Forward is just too "out there."

                  IMO.

Somehow TNG fared a lot better profitwise than FC did.

I loved TNG when it aired, every season. but watching it now it bores me to tears. the earlier seasons especially. I agree with most everything that has been said already. those first season episodes were stinkers and even Patrick Stewart has commented about that episode with the planet of black people as being totally racist and he hated that episode. denise Crosby left the show because of the lack of charater development.....coursse her career went nowhere after that...she should have stayed, at least it was a paycheck.
I always laughed about the fact that Worf always got his *** kicked...some klingon he was, and chief of security no less. they made him much tougher when he joined DS9

I think the casino episode was a play on Casino royal wasnt it?

still there were some great episodes through the run and the final season was the best.

I also find that the effects have not held up at all.....the effects on TOS have held up far better than those on TNG

I agree 100%! I've read that in most cases the first season of a show is kind of like a experimental test bed. I think buy season 3 TNG had found it's pacing and the shows were a lot better.

I'm pretty sure outside of this board there are a lot more fans of TNG than on it. It hasn't aged too well, but it was immensely popular when it was on and created a whole new Trek fanbase. The first seasons have always been considered incredibly weak, and Roddenbery had a lot more control over the show and actually made it what he'd originally intended Trek to be - so blame the sterility and nobility of the characters and the focus on diplomacy and less fistfights on him.
