Some one mentioned Nana Visitor. If you blinked, you almost missed her at the beginning of the new Friday 13th.

If you look at imdb, you see that Nana Visitor has remained a working actress since DS9. Most of it hasn't been high profile stuff, but she hasn't disappeared either. I've seen her several times on the series "Wildfire".

Her characterization of Kira Nerys bugged me initially. I thought she really overacted her way thru the first few eps. And I hated how she always stood like there was still a coat hanger in her uniform.

She won me over as the show progressed and she got more comfortable. You could tell how much she loved the character and the show, and she's said as much in interviews.

I saw Nana Visitor recently in a Kevin Costner movie...she played the wife of somebody for all of five minutes.

        I guess that's work.

Exactly...that's what I was trying to say, lol.

She's a little more than an extra nowadays.

Nobodies a bigger trek fan than me and I'm saying season one was baddddd.Thats why it was shaken up in season two,but it was only a little better.Luckily there was a hunger for new trek to keep it going. Now in season three things got better and by the season ending cliffhanger it became a worthy successor and "first Contact "was an awesome movie,TNG at it's best.
This always happens to a new show, take DS9 for example.I know it wasn't a fan favorite and almost got canned by season two,but when Sisko's character was allowed to expand it to got much better. It became the war time trek and it's action was intense.Sisko became one of the great captains.Voyager ....was never what it could have been.OK idea but poorly done .....and poor "enterprise"only became what it should have been in it's last season. It should have been renewed
One more thing.....I just got some feedback from some trek fans who got to see a special opinion screening of the new trek film and I quote "IT WAS AWSOME".I hope so...They said it takes some liberties but not to bad and is trek at it's best...

At least for Next Gen, despite the awkward first year, it really gelled by Year 3 (wish they would have given the same attention and support to 'Firefly'..!).

'Course for those of you familiar with Paramount, they were deciding to kill Next Gen by Year 5, since despite the high ratings, it was actually cutting in on it's own success by having more seasons in production. Affliates only needed so many episodes for syndication, so the larger the amount of episodes put into a 'package deal', the more $$ they'd have to dish out to buy the show. Success, this time, was working against Trek.

Add that to all the production costs and salary contracts, Paramount commissioned DS9 and moved Next Gen to the big screen after a few more years.

DS9 was a good idea, business-wise, since you could have different local affiliates buy different series and compete for ratings (this was before SpikeTV and the SciFi Channel got into the game..).

Going back to the original subject .....

                I didn't mind season-1

It was raw, but a lot of the stuff that made the series a hit in later years evolved from season-1.

Take away the obvious flaws like Wesley, the bad SFX and some stinker stories ...

My biggest gripe against season-1 was it was way too late 80's politically correct.

It's almost embarrassing watching some of season-1's dialog today.

It's like it was geared toward 5 year old kids.

I know they were still getting their "space legs" as far as writing goes but yes I too cringe when I watch the first few seasons. Its almost painful to watch.
Lo there do I see my Father.
Lo there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
                  Lo they do call me.
They bid me take my place among them.

I think it is fine in the areas john mentioned in OP (on par or better than other shows right out of the gate)
I think the characters, plots, stores and sets develop nicely as the show matures.

Im must agree with all of your initial remarks Coach. I loved TOS but remember absolutely hating NG when it came out. They would've been destroyed by the first aliens they ran across. I did grow to like Picard, but never did care for the rest of the crew at all.

I will occasionally see the show channel surfing and I've noticed that the first season out of all them, has really aged poorly. It's not as noticable with later seasons.
I agree 100%. I've never understood the appeal to this show because of it's sterile feel. Also, the way it is shot bores me to tears. I know that making every set on the ship look like a regular 80s office workplace fits the ideology of the show - but it's really dull to look at, and all the shooting is sooo static, compared to the original series it's like watching a show filmed by security cameras.

When I saw the first season in the 1980's I loved the 80's PC stuff. But today, with the way I think, it would really turn me off to the show.

Even so, I thought the Ferengi took the "subtle comment on present society" thing to a ridiculous level. When they finally revealed the Ferengi, after all the buildup of them being something really formidable, they turned out to be instead goofy ultra capitalist yuppie rat gnomes who, if Roddenberry could get away with it would make the Grand Nagus look like Ronald Reagan. I was too young to even consider the possible anti-semetic connotations.

Of course, Ferengi's found their place in the Trek universe... as comic relief.

I still love TNG from the first season on, but in different ways then I used to.

I've always loved the Next Generation, but maybe it's "generational". Ha. I watched it when I was a kid and -- where others see a sterile environment -- I remember just thinking it was clean and comfortable and, air conditioned. (Grew up in Arizona without it.) I like the Original Series, but at the time, I thought the OS set looked dingy by comparison and that the characters were always sweaty and looked like they needed a shower.

I never noticed the first season to be much worse than the others, just that the "look" and the costumes improved later. Wesley is everyone's whipping boy but -- again, proper "kid" context -- Stand By Me was like my favorite movie at the time, so I thought it was cool that Gordie LaChance was on Star Trek (and that it was weird he was working alongside a character with a similar name).

No, the one who bothered me was Riker. Beard or no beard, he was like your friend's surly dad, the one that made you think twice about sleeping over 'cause you were afraid you or your friend would p*ss him off, and then you'd be stuck there.

I didn't even watch it regularly until the second season. I think the costumes look bad and I hate the way Deanna Troi looks in season 1. Plus I just always hated the Ferengi.

I really didn't like the Ferengi as comic relief, but I liked them as they were depicted in their first two appearances; vicious, wicked, conniving little liars that represent the worst of unenlightened self-motivation and greed. I liked the episode where one with a grudge came after Picard and he was arrested by others of his race because revenge was an activity "there was no profit in." I thought that was a neat little story.

I was disappointed that the Quark character on DS9 was a buffoon rather than an operator with dozens of underground deals going who was too slick to have anything pinned on him, even by Odo.

                                I liked the Quark character.

It was pretty interesting watching him evolve from a Ferengi to a semi-respected member of the Federation by the end of the series.

It's like hanging around HOOmons rubbed off on him, which is great character developement.
