    >Then it seems the channels switch gears and become mini networks, you still get some good stuff but when you try to crawl out of niche, you become less special...

VERY true. The biggest heartbreak for me was a few years back when Bravo (the highbrow channel) was showing "TJ Hooker."

I think part of the problem is that, as stations get more specialized the number of shows they can draw from diminishes. And if you want to make NEW genre appropriate shows you gotta spend money, which nobody wants to do. So G4 stops being about video games and ever so slowly shifts into the "hip young hipster" market. Like durned near everything else...

Anything that is a "Syfy original" I stay away from. It's the ultimate "nerd" channel that gives the label a truly bad name. Bad acting, cheesy effects, and essentially juvenile dialogue make for an unforgiving experience. I'm nostalgic, not retarded.

"Syfy Channel: Short for 'syphilis for you', it is a channel where new sci-fi shows are created based on old sci-fi shows, retreaded and reassembled like crusty multi-colored play doh that is drying out. Also includes new movies where giant CGI animals are sent on a rampage after actors with no will to live (or act)."
Sadly, that pretty well sums up my feelings about the Sci-Fi Channel. Years ago I used to watch alot of their programming, but since they stopped showing Dr. Who I've lost interest in the channel completely. I miss Harlan Ellison's rants on the Sci-Fi Buzz, used to watch it every Saturday morning.

I don't think anyone wants to be a "genre" player anymore. Being more things to more people means more $$$ in their eyes I suppose.

Sci-Fi Channel hit its peak around 2000. Farscape was the water-cooler show topic back then. Everyone was noticing it. Then thay had a solid Friday night schedule of Sci-Fi Buzz, Inside Space, LEXX, Black Scorpion & Stargate. They had innovative station ID's and a solid block of programming. They couldn't build upon it tho.

Farscape decided to do drug-induced hallucinations every episode and wore itself down. LEXX wrapped, Sci-Fi Buzz and Inside Space were cancelled. They premired The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne which wasn't that good and that left Stargate and its sin-off to carry the network. New BSG came along but it didn't bring back the audiences they lost.

I remember when I first moved back to the states and I called it "Skiffy".

Back then, it was a great channel to watch. Probably before they got into original programming. I remember them running the oldies but goodies back then.

I have enjoyed some of the original series like Eureka and Warehouse 13, but I would trade it all for what it was like in 1994-1996.
