It all comes downs down to ....

    Either Shearer is a lyer.
    I'm a lyer.
Nobody is a lyer and it's true.

    Believe what you want.

Write to NBC and ask for a transcripts of the episodes where Shearer was a guest on Letterman and judge for yourself.
Listen to Scott---I'm not implying either you or Shearer is lying...

and, also Mike, I'm not looking to argue. Jeez, I was just contributing
to your interesting thread...it's no biggie.

And a transcript surely would help. Of course I'm not realistically ever
    going to see one.

What I DO know (without seeing ---or reading----the Letterman clip)
is that Shearer has a real dry and vast sense of humor.

That "Shearer humor aspect" was the only thing I was trying to diagram with
my last post in which I theorized he might have been trying to be funny and
you might've took him literally without realizing it.

I'm further convinced that he's not Harry Shearer...way too tall.

Here's the cast of the Day of the Dove:

Day of the Dove (1968) - Full cast and crew

        Here's the uncredited cast:

Roger Holloway ... Lt. Lemli (uncredited)
Jay D. Jones ... Klingon (uncredited)
        Pete Kellett ... Klingon (uncredited)
David Sharpe ... Security Officer (uncredited)

Even Memory Alpha (who lists every uncredited extra in Star Trek)...nothing comes up in a Harry Shearer search:

I've met the entire cast as well (even got a hug and kiss on the cheek from Marina Sirtis, who's really tiny, lol)...I'm 6' 2"...and yes...they are for the most part short.

The Next Generation is quite the opposite, especially Michael Dorn (who's about my height)...and even the taller Jonathan Frakes, lol.

Yo Mike, whether we agree or not about Harry Shearer being in a Trek episode as an uncredited crewman...this is a very good thread...makes you wanna find out more about classic Trek...and that's what counts.

There's nothing over at TV.com. They've got a full listing of stuff he's done. Nothing about Star Trek.

It doesn't look like him to me.
Theory: what if a ST fan came up to him once and said they saw him in this episode. He told the fan he was mistaken, it's not him. The fan insisted it was him and went on to give the plot synopsis of which Harry only recalled Klingons, security guard and swords. Later he's on Letterman and decides it would be one of those interesting "stories" the celebrities tell when they are on talk shows (that most of the time are made up). You (and others) hear him talk about it and the myth perpetuates.

I dropped by his official web-site today and saw an e-mail address for him....being it's New Years I never expected a reply, but got this back tonight :

                      Hello,
I am hoping you can resolve a little "barroom" bet. A friend of mine says you were in the classic Star Trek episode "Day of the Dove" playing a security guard. Some of the other guys say "no way!"

Could you please shed some light on what is crazily becoming a big deal?

                      Thanks....and Happy New Year!!

Cool that I even got a reply ---(and sad for him...what tv star sits at home on New Years Eve answering e-mails??)----even if it doesnt agree with what I thought. Sorry Mike, thought you were onto something here....He must have been pullin' Lettermans leg.

Of course he is probably thinking how sad it is you are home on New Years Eve frantically trying to figure out if he was actually ever in a Star Trek episode.

That's exactly what I would have done (gone to his official site..). Now, certainly HATE to cause more fire, but some guys don't answer their own site mail, but it's weird that he would have simply picked a Trek plot out of the blue to mention on Letterman all those years ago: He could have simply said.. 'Yeah, I did a Trek where I was one of the Transporter Operators' or something.

Oh, well it's still a cool thread. Thanks, Type1kirk! Again, excellent find!
                            Peace.. Through Superior Firepower.

Oh well. I guess I can identify comic artists' work from a mile a way, but not the younger selves of aged actors too well.

Cool that he responded so quickly. And the guy did bear a likeness to him.
