Hmmmm....
I wonder what their criteria is. Some of the choices are all over the place.
>I have no problems with Blade Runner being number 1...
Yeah. This is a weird one, since a lot of folks have never seen it. But it had such a huge impact on the thought process behind movie designs that you HAVE seen it, even if you haven't. So even if it's a cult film it had a pretty long lasting effect.
The Matrix sort of has the same effect; except it's contirbution was more literal. (I think there's a law now that every action movie that comes out HAS to do the pause and pan thing....) I don't think it's a cult thing though, since it's pretty well known and EVERYBODY'S seen it. It's more of a fad I guess. Especially since it's lasting contribution was pretty superficial.
>Galaxy Quest???? Puh-leese......
This and Tron are weird ones. They didn't do so well when originaly released, and they're pretty low key, and a lot of people liked tham; but in both cases it always seems like they're being PUSHED as cult classics more than they actually are.
I would have put the original Body Snatchers on the list as opposed to the (first) remake. The second one didn't really add too much except better effects. (Mostly. Except the dog.) Even the more shocking ending isn't neccessarily a big deal, since we don't actually know how the original ended. (Some might say that's even creepier.) Plus, they really went out on a limb with the original. Considering the time a serious sci-fi flick with political undertones would have been quite revolutionary. The remake really wasn't.
I wouldn't put Terminator 2 in there. The original sure; it was a no budget flick that came out of nowhere and did an excelent job telling a weird story. (Plus it put Arnie in a role he was MADE for: an expressionless, unemotional robot.) But the second was pretty much just an eyeball massage that actually took away from the original. (So.... Skynet was defeated, sent Arnie back in time with the last of it's resources to kill John's mom, the humans managed to get things working just enough to send Reese back, BUT Skynet had ANOTHER secret time travel doohickey, sent a SUPER ROBOT back a little later, so the humans who managed to reprogram an Arnie sent him back TOO.... How many of these damned time trvel things are there?!?!?!) I'd be tempted to put ALiens in this category too; but it seems like the second one made more of an impact on most people than the first. I would have rated it lower though, since it kinda destroyed sci-fi films. (If I see one more group of space marines creeping through corridors looking for monsters I'm gonna puke!)
>No wrath of Khan, ROTJ, Predator??
I thinkthe "yub-nub" song is enough to exclude Jedi, and Predator was Aliens in a jungle.

I liked Galaxy Quest too! Some say Crocodile Dundee was one of the better Tarzan films ever made....well Galaxy Quest may be one of the better Trek films made! (Well, at least better than the TNG stuff)

It unfortunately is marred by 2 of the worst sequels ever. -the kind that aren't satisfied with being bad iin their own right - they poop on the original.Comment

No, not really............well, maybe just a little bit!But honestly, I think it's one of the GREATEST Si-Fi Movies EVER made!!
I agree it was all down Hill from there(liked reloaded, it set up the series for a great finish...but they BLEW IT!
). But the first Matrix didn't need a sequel...it stands alone just fine!

>Sure it is...anytime you have technology...no matter how fantastical the setting is...it's still considered science fiction.
I agree, AND remember the huge argument that went on a year or so back over this....
>Galaxy Quest is a great film...certainly better than most Star Trek flicks, lol.
HAW ! Gotta agree here, too.
>I don't agree with The Matrix, personally, but it does have a fervent following.
I dunno if it does any more. It's tough to tell how popular something is any more. Every movie is the number one film, and a true milestone in fimmaking, and the gratest thing ever, and resonantes on a primordial level with the audience.... while it's playing. Then they sort of go away. Until the special edition disks come out.
Hype can be tough to sift through.
