I have a silly question. Why are they building the Enterprise on the Earth. If they have dry docks in orbit why not build it there. I know that is probably a minor little thing since starships in themselves are a suspension of dis-belief. But how many resources must be used to keep the thing from falling over from gravity?

I saw it this weekend when I saw the new Bond film.
Here's the thing...
I went with a group of friends and aquantances. One of the guys is sitting next to me on my right. He's my age. When the Trek trailer started playing, he was (rather loudly) making comments like 'ah man, I can't believe they brought that show back', 'that's the suckiest show of all time', so on and so forth (I count this guy as an aquantance, not a friend)
But sitting next to me on my left were two friends who are both sixteen. Typical teens, big video game freaks, that's all the talking about before the movie started. In fact, when the lights started dimming, I and the rest of our group were starting to wonder whether they were going to keep yapping about the video game crap during the whole movie.
Anyway, when the Trek trailer started, they both got real quiet. They weren't standing up and cheering or anything, but at the end they both indicated they though it looked kinda cool.
Thing is, I think people from my generation either like or love Trek (like me) or they absolutely hate it (like the jerk on my right). They are who they are and nothing going to change their minds. Ironically, if this movie was called anything other than Star Trek he probably would've thought it was cool.
I think Abrams is going after the younger generation like the two teens on my left who really don't know much about Trek haven't formed a strong opinion about Trek one way or the other. Whether it'll work or not, we'll have to wait and see.
As for me, yeah I got a bit of a tingle, but I'm keeping my expectations low. I'll go see it.
Hey, the Bond movie I saw is nothing like the Bond I grew up with and love. But like these new Bond movies for what they are, largely because of Daniel Craig. If the actors are strong in this, it might be the same thing. It'll never replace the Trek I grew up with and love, but I might find something I like, we'll see.Comment

---not great thinking I guess---sure, it's kind of silly to take STAR TREK
photos as if they were promoting a teen dramedy flick----they shoulda got
the BATMAN BEGINS guys to take the promo pics
Anyways----cool to hear the trailer is being recieved more positively
than the pics."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

I saw the Trek preview the other day when I went to see "Quantum of Solace". Also saw "The Spirit" preview but the sound of Will Eisner turning in his grave made that one hard to hear.
The Trek preview is quite impressive on the big screen. I'm still not sold on
going to see it though. I still don't like the premise of the movie.Comment

Teens have a very short attention span.
If they do like it, they'll see it once and that will be the end of it.
My opinion, they should be going for the old fart fans.
WE'RE the people nutty enough to see it 20 times in the movies, buy the videos and collect the merchandise... not to mention watch the TV spin-offs.
Teens aren't going to do any of that.
When we see a movie and love it, we cherish it forever ......

But Mike....a lot of People in this thread have said, that the Trailer looks good...and that they would go see it! And I don't think anybody of this Site is a Teen.sigpicComment

Mike's starting to sound like a certain Who fan.
Mike, if you don't like it, just don't look. It'll be that easy to ignore. This movie is not going to make the classic series disappear and it's far better than a trek movie with the remaining living cast members.
Oh and Teens spend money like water, they are the demographic to get, they see movies multiple times and buy merchandise. I have lots of marketing data to support this. Star Trek fans all go see the movie on opening weekend and it dies. Only when the general movie going public gets involved, do you get a smash hit.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions

This is no dis to anyone here, but I think a lot of people want Star Trek Classic back so bad, it's blinding them to accept anything they see diguising itself as Classic Trek.
The same thing happened for Superman Returns and the first Hulk movie.Comment
