Don't make your skits go too long or do too many of them. And don't use too many characters. That's always a downer when I'm watching the horror host shows. And I always like when the host can give a little information about the movie instead of just unrelated sketches, even if it's just a quick anecdote.

Personally I would tone down some of the camp and ramp up a little of the creepy factor. Most of the people I see doing it now, do a total camp fest, which is okay, but as a kid I always liked a little legit scare in there.

So I'd make sure the sets or the characters had a little bit of edge to them.

You should still do some humor, but don't do the whole thing as a joke.

          Just my .2

Again, great stuff guys and gals! Keep 'em coming. It's really helping me weed out some ideas that have been in my head for five years now and inspiring some new ones. You folks really do rock! I'm getting more and more motivated to do it just to show you guys and gals more so than the locals

You can't go wrong by tapping into that classic EC vibe.

Gorey Wit. Scare 'em, Shock 'em, then disarm them with a tension relieving joke or gag.

              Play it completely straight deadpan.

The spooky castle/mad scientist routine is always a good chestnut that allows you the maximum amount of versatility for interesting new scenarios and guest creatures he's whipping up in the lab.

Me too. He was a local here in Winter Haven and we saw him quite a bit.

Do a live show at a small theater, if such places still exist in your area, and host a midnight showing.

Actually I think even better than a theatre would be to do a DRIVE IN movie show. Assuming you could do something like that. Drive ins seems like they'd be more apt to allow something like that and Drive Ins were the ultimate monster movie experiances back in the day.

I would also do Contests and Giveaways. On Halloween you can have a costume contest were viewers call in there votes and decide the winner. Those are always popular.

I completely agree with Del, keep it short. Nothing kills a skit faster than letting it run too long. I also like for the host to actually talk about the movie, it's much more enjoyable if you're ripping on the scenes I just watched. Camp is fun, but a bit of creep makes it complete.

There is a documentary on Vampira and a new one called Virginia Creepers, it features over fifty years of horror hosts from VA and MD, both are great reference material.

                        Good luck

What kind of character is/was your original horror host?

The main fellow was a zombie cowboy. His backstory was that he was singing cowboy in the silent film era

I plan on using that character again but thanks to the input here and some research I've done I'm formulating a new way to tackle the old genre. I really want to add some genuinely funny stuff mixed in with really good creepy stuff. I so appreciate the input from everyone. The level of replies is a great motivator. If nothing else, at the end of the day I know I can rely on my Mego Buddies for moral support and encouragement.

In case you missed it here's some the last remaining pieces I have from some of the original show from'05

I like the look of your zombie cowboy. There is a music group called the Boogie Knights they have a song called Zombie Pete, it's about a western sheriff who was gunned down by outlaws, then rose from the dead as a zombie. You should check it out.

jimsmegos, thank you for the link! do you plan to continue with the animation or are you considering live action?

This post really stood out to me:
