          American cricket???
Cricket was the USA's national sport until the Civil War, when Union Army officers found that the thousands of non-English recruits needed a simpler game to keep them amused in camp – and thus baseball/rounders was introduced. There is a famous 18th C painting by Benjamin West called simply "The Cricketers" that depicts five young Americans during their education in England – two became members of Congress, and three were Loyalists (one died, the other two lost everything and had to leave America).

The first ever international cricket match was not between England and Australia, but between an English XI and a US XI just after the Civil War, and was intended to improve relations which had worsened during the conflict. The game was played beside the US-Canadian border and the border itself formed one of the boundaries. However, the Canadians were singularly unimpressed (this was around the time of the Fenian Invasions) and when the ball was stuck over this boundary, only the English players were allowed to come across and retrieve it. Up to the 1870s/1880s there were well-kept cricket grounds in most East Coast cities, such as New York, Boston and Philadelphia.

Hollywood had a substantial cricketing presence between the World Wars, with the likes of David Niven, Bill Pratt (aka Boris Karloff) and other British actors. The West Coast has subsequently seen much immigration from the West Indies and Indian subcontinent who have continued this tradition. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, there was a scheme run by a couple of community workers (in San Francisco I think) to rehabilitate young drug addicts by teaching them cricket – one team actually came over to play at Lords as a reward.

I remember a tale of Ian Botham (cricketeer of some fame) being taken to "have a go" at baseball. The pitcher lobbed him a nice slow ball and Ian clubbed it out of the park, next ball a little quicker, same result a few balls later the pitcher is throwing everything at him his full bag of tricks and still the ball is being despatched to all corners. "Easy game that!" pronounces Mr. Botham as he retires leaving an exasperated pitcher in his wake!

Not sure how true that is, I seem to remember reading it in our (ever reliable) press! I think it does prove that if you have the incredible hand to eye coordination of an Ian Botham – who it should be noted also played professional football for S****horpe and was a scratch golfer – you can pretty much excel at any such sport!

The USS Constitution kicked your but in the revolution. This is still that ship not a reproduction.

Funny thing is a few years back when they where refitting it it was the Brits that helped out. Seems the sister ship was captured during the war and the brits made detailed plans of that ship. The plans showed parts that where missing, lost or removed over the years and we where able to replace them.

This is what they did to the poor ship during and after the civil war.

I could be wrong here but I'm pretty sure hockey is a Canadian sport.

Hitler wasn’t the only person glad to hear that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. When Churchill telephoned President Roosevelt to confirm the bombing, the Prime Minister said, “This certainly simplifies things. God be with you.” Churchill later said the situation was “a blessing... greater good fortune has rarely happened to the British Empire.”
