I wouldn't go as far to say that or put it that way. Something twinged a nerve that's all, I'm not going to huck a rock at you from my glass casa.

I don't mind a contrary opinion either, I just don't want to hear how stupid I am because my preferences aren't the same.

Being a huge who fan, I can honestly say this entire thread never struck one nerve with me. I remember in college, a guy stumbled into my dorm room and before saying hello, went through my vinyl. He turned and shook his head "I like some of the metal but guy, all the punk has to go" I started laughing and said "that's why it's my room, it's full of what I like"

    >I'd rather we didn't

Y'know.... I didn't mind the guy. He had that whole "frothing fanboy" thing down pretty good, which was a PROBLEM since the discussion usually degenerated to the internet equivalent of shouting for a time; but it was interesting to see someone who's opinion was very different from my own. I LIKE that; makes me scrutinize my own position. And irritating people are REAL wasy to ignore online....

Problem is; a lot of folks are absolutely HORRID at debate. Since we are so seldom required to interact with people of different opinions we've lost the ABILITY to do so. Most topics are emotionally charged, and extremely subjective; generally deteriorating into innuendo and bile since most participants feel the need to "win" and lack the verbal agility to decisively do so.

Seriously; if folks lose it over "Old vs New Galactica" how do you think they'd keep it together over IMPORTANT stuff?

But I don't think that means we shouldn't TRY. I haven't found this thread to be too bad, really. (Not compared to SOME of the ones we've had...)

You might as well just invite Rob Brittanicus back in for his thesis on all incarnations of Doctor Who.

    I'd rather we didn't

I really don't see why this thread has been allowed to go on for so long. It's been ugly since page 1. Seriously, you guys lock down threads about religion, politics and forbid threads regarding Robert Aquillaro but you let this go for 5 or so pages. You might as well just invite Rob Brittanicus back in for his thesis on all incarnations of Doctor Who.

    >People say Doctor Who is boring ...... The new BG is WAY WORSE on the boring meter.

It ties in with what I mentioned earlier; wether you enjoy stuff conceptually or literally.

The new Galactica is a fairly well put together show. The plots are solidly constructed, the effects are quite good, the characters and acting are functional: very well done, but I also find it really dull. Mostly 'cos it's everything I've seen before. There's NOTHING new to it.

The old Who is the exact opposite: the plots are all over the place, the effects are negligible, and a lot of the acting is... well, we'll be charitable and say over-done. BUT there were so many new, weird IDEAS in it. Strange science, freaky aliens, characters you wouldn't normally see in a sci-fi/action series. I could look beyond "the beast in platex living gloves" because there were so many other things that I found interesting. One of the things I like about the new Who is that they have better effects, plotting and budget; but they kept a lot of the old "what the hell was THAT?!?!" sort of thing.

I watched it one time, I nearly went into a coma.

Sorry, but I rather watch a piece of metal try to grow some branches.

Okay I hate the fans who dress up too.....I used to hate them when I was behind the stall at Who conventions...and for some reason they were ALWAYS the fans that the media centered on.....always coming across as...well ...immature idiots...which for a long time tarred ALL Who fans with the same brush....it was not a good time.
The thing is with Who is it's all part of the growing up phase....before video...before dvd...before youtube or the internet....In England there were only a few programs on in the late 60's and 70's that were worth watching...and Who was one of them....the build up to each weeks conclusion to a cliffhanger was sometimes unbearable and caused much conversation and consternation at school ALL week.....and that was part of it....all growing up with the same Doctor and ALL feeling that sense of belonging.
You'd watch saturday tea time and have to wait....wait until monday at school to talk about it (no mobiles and hardly any kids used the phone in those days)...and then again the long agonising wait for next weeks episode (wether it was to see how the Doctor got out of a situation or what the new story and monster were).
The fact that it was a WEEKLY show does not hold up too well in the days of dvd and internet...YES the plot sometimes dragged ...that was the point ...it dragged you slowly into the story and made you care about companions and support characters....if they died you felt it.....the format meant that stories had to be better written anmd allow for exposition.....it's a BRITISH thing.
You are all of course entitled to your opinions about the show (they are wrong...lol...but you're entitled to them), I love it....LOVE IT I TELLS YA!!!.....but then I love original trek, Star Wars, and 50's/60's sci-fi too and much much more....
