I've tried several times to like it. I just can't get past the cheese factor and the entire look of the show. I did enjoy the Peter Cushing movie.

I love Dr who but I also love star trek and Star wars. I think anything that has a rabid fanbase can be seen as overrated by others (and that includes our toy obsessions). For those whose 1st exposure to SCI FI was star wars or something of that production value yeaf Dr who can seem lame but compared to 50's movies, star trek TOS, or even Space 1999 (the horta is a freaking rug) it is about even
lets be honest for it's production time (except the last 10 years of the original run when the Beeb was always cutting the budget) it's effects are equal to other tv production scifi. Do the effects of the 60's star trek stand up any better compared to stuff from today?

If it is isn't your cup of tea ok but don't call it overrated.

"50 million Elvis fans can't be wrong" but lots of people think Elvis was overrated too (especially the post 65 albums)

Okay I hate the fans who dress up too.....I used to hate them when I was behind the stall at Who conventions...and for some reason they were ALWAYS the fans that the media centered on.....always coming across as...well ...immature idiots...which for a long time tarred ALL Who fans with the same brush....it was not a good time.
The thing is with Who is it's all part of the growing up phase....before video...before dvd...before youtube or the internet....In England there were only a few programs on in the late 60's and 70's that were worth watching...and Who was one of them....the build up to each weeks conclusion to a cliffhanger was sometimes unbearable and caused much conversation and consternation at school ALL week.....and that was part of it....all growing up with the same Doctor and ALL feeling that sense of belonging.
You'd watch saturday tea time and have to wait....wait until monday at school to talk about it (no mobiles and hardly any kids used the phone in those days)...and then again the long agonising wait for next weeks episode (wether it was to see how the Doctor got out of a situation or what the new story and monster were).
The fact that it was a WEEKLY show does not hold up too well in the days of dvd and internet...YES the plot sometimes dragged ...that was the point ...it dragged you slowly into the story and made you care about companions and support characters....if they died you felt it.....the format meant that stories had to be better written anmd allow for exposition.....it's a BRITISH thing.
You are all of course entitled to your opinions about the show (they are wrong...lol...but you're entitled to them), I love it....LOVE IT I TELLS YA!!!.....but then I love original trek, Star Wars, and 50's/60's sci-fi too and much much more....
ENGLISH AND DAMN PROUD OF IT British by birth....English by the grace of God. Yes Jamie...it is big isn't it....

There's a lot of Sci Fi shows out there that I personally hate ......

The new Battlestar Galactica for one ....

People say Doctor Who is boring ...... The new BG is WAY WORSE on the boring meter.

I tried to watch it once to see what all the hype was .....

I was the first show I ever seen where I looked up to the commercial breaks

                                >People say Doctor Who is boring ...... The new BG is WAY WORSE on the boring meter.

It ties in with what I mentioned earlier; wether you enjoy stuff conceptually or literally.

The new Galactica is a fairly well put together show. The plots are solidly constructed, the effects are quite good, the characters and acting are functional: very well done, but I also find it really dull. Mostly 'cos it's everything I've seen before. There's NOTHING new to it.

The old Who is the exact opposite: the plots are all over the place, the effects are negligible, and a lot of the acting is... well, we'll be charitable and say over-done. BUT there were so many new, weird IDEAS in it. Strange science, freaky aliens, characters you wouldn't normally see in a sci-fi/action series. I could look beyond "the beast in platex living gloves" because there were so many other things that I found interesting. One of the things I like about the new Who is that they have better effects, plotting and budget; but they kept a lot of the old "what the hell was THAT?!?!" sort of thing.

                                Don C.
