Mike and Jemboy,. . .I think a few people pointed out through the thread. . .that whilst their popularity was not maintained in the USA so much after the 1970's. . . that it never wained in other parts of the World. And what are the greatest or best things in the world. . . should not always be determined through the filter of American eyes/or tastes.

Similar thing in the Doc Who thread perhaps going on. A cultural divide. America is not the world. . . it is just one of the better places in it.

Your World Series Baseball. . . .um. . .how much of the world actually plays it. . .big in the US and Japan, and the rest of the world plays Soccer/Football.

So we all filter the world through our own cultural perspective. . . but everyone in the world is entitled to an opinion, and in many cases, the rest of the world may differ to the general American populus.

One of the problems discussing stuff like this is putting it in a chronological context. Queen was a sort of culmination of a few trends in music: glam, bigger more opratic songs, what's now called "progressive rock." They took all this stuff from the 70's and squished it onto one polished up whole. Then they kept it going for years.

Nothing exists in a vaccumn; and accrdingly neither did Queen. Also, FROM them came a lot of other bands, and they had influence that lasts to this day. BUT it's tough to see that 'cos for most of us we have very limited experience with a time when that WASN'T the case. So it can be tough measuring how influential they; or any OTHER band has actually been.

Are they the greatest band ever? I dunno. Are they over-hyped? I'd DEFINITELY say that some of their songs are. Can you make that case for ANY band? Yup.

I only own a few of their albums and am not a huge fan, but I would not consider them over-rated. People still recognize their songs. I know people who consider them one of their favorite bands.

There are other bands who are supposed to be great or have reputations as being such a big deal, despite the fact that hardly anyone can name any of their songs. How about the Yardbirds? Every rock fan can name the 3 guitarists from the Yardbirds. How many can name 3 of their songs?? Can you name 3 people who you know personally who actually own an album by the Yardbirds? The only hit song they had in the US was "For your Love" a pop tune also covered by Hermans' Hermits. And just like Herman's Hermits, the Yardbirds' version was mostly recorded by studio musicians. So, if anyone wants to name a really over-rated band, how about the Yardturds?

Freddy had a great voice and was also a great front man. I know a lot of the David Lee Roth fans at the Museum make a big deal of what a great front man he was. I agree, but DLR could barely sing in key and had a limited vocal range. Freddy had one of the best voices in R&R history.

Let's not forget about Brain May, he seems to get lost in the shuffle sometimes from non-Queen fans...but he was every bit as influential as Mercury in Queen, wrote the same amount of songs, has a splendid mind who became a physicist and was appointed Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University, and has arguably the most distinct guitar riff sound in all of rock.
