Looks like I gotta adapt again - DVD/BluRay disappearing

Went on vacation a couple of weeks ago, and in shopping for a couple of DVDs to play for the kids in the van I noticed that the local Meijer selection had shrunk again since last time I paid any attention. I was out today looking for the Disney Narnia DVDs, and thought for sure I'd have some luck at Target. Lo and behold, I was surprised to see the DVD/BluRay section shrunk to maybe a fifth of what it was just a few months ago. Next stop, TRU, and similar results there. In a last ditch effort I backtracked to Half Price Books, and was able to find the first and third installments.

I know I can find these streaming somewhere on my Roku for $3-$5, and save myself the space of a DVD that I may not watch again for years if ever. But I still can't bring myself to give up the search just yet. It's sure looking like the time to buy is at release because no one is going to stock a library anymore.

It's been shrinking at best buy too! used to be several aisles in the store, now it's shrunk down to a few! Everything is going digital now!

I'm glad I'm a Disney Movie Club member. At least you can still get DVDs from them.

I'm not giving up physical media. The day games and movies are released digital only is the day I stop buying.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I love streaming movies. I've seen so many movies in the last five years, that I'd been wanting to see for 30 years or longer, and I get them straight from my TV! It's Magical!! Many of them are on DVD/Blu-Ray, but streaming is simply easier, and takes up zero space. But I'm looking at it as more of a rental, than a buying scenario. The movies I want to always have access to (since the world of streaming is fluid) I buy from Amazon.

+1. You can't beat a hard copy. No way will I pay for streaming. I'll probably open up a new can of worms here, but there IS a difference in quality between blu-ray and streaming.

I couldn't agree more. while I do watch streaming and admittedly buy less than I used to, I still prefer a hard copy in my hands. better quality and I can watch whenever I want, not only when it comes up in rotation on a streaming service

I love having physical copies. Almost all of my music and movie collections are DVD/Bluray/CDs. I am not about to give them up.

God forbid a virus wipes out your computer data, and then you'd have to pay for the stuff all over again! NOPE!

I wouldn't panic. In music, CDs are just as hard to find at retailers... but they are still easy enough to buy online. I expect the same thing will hold true for movies. It takes a lot of shelf space to stock a wide selection of movies. Other than recent releases, I doubt they see the sales to warrant the shelf space.

That said... a bunch of discs is a hassle to store, a hassle to travel with, always run the risk of getting scratched, etc. I like the idea of digital downloads and/or streaming improving that whole process. I just don't think they have stumbled upon an implementation that is as elegant as the iPod was for music.

Doesn't have to be a virus. Could be any old thing. You could have the computer crash or just plain not work.

I love both. Streaming is amazing. I love having access to nearly anything, often for free. I have a lot of DVDs, and they're all movies and shows that I'll watch over and over, but they take up a ton of space. I don't buy or download digital movies, I just rent so I never worry about losing things in a computer crash or whatever. It's amazingly easy to buy a DVD copy of anything I rent.
Expectation is the death of discovery.

If its a movie I want to watch again, I want a physical copy. That used to be DVD, but I've upgraded a bunch of those to blu-ray, which I've been buying exclusively for a few years now. I understand there's a newer, better format now (4K, I think?), but I'm not upgrading again.
For one-time viewings, and for most TV shows, I'm ok with streaming.
