He played a Mexican in Touch of Evil.
A Jew in 10 Commandments.
A Jew in Ben-Hur.
A Spaniard in El Cid.
An American Astronaut in PotA.
A Frenchman with an English accent in Three Musketeers.
A lonely cowpoke in Will Penny.
A circus ringmaster in The Greatest Show on Earth.
The "last man on earth" in that movie about the last man on earth (the name of which escapes me).
Charlton Heston was an awesome, powerful presence and a skilled performer. I loved him and I will honor his memory the rest of my life.Comment

Before Heston took ill he was interviewed when AMC was running their debut apes marathon. He predicted the film would be remade (which it was) But his take then, would be to have Arnold Schwarzenegger (this is before he took on the role as governator, mind you) be a cigar chomping Taylor (and I could really picture this, walking around the desert in a flight suit). And the epic would take on a resemblance to Preditor or something of the nature. It would still have it's original message about man's self annihilation. Soon after, I was reading about genetic engineering they were doing on Monkeys. by inserting Human DNA to combat diseases. Also with Ahmadinejad and Iran's nuclear program, Alkeda, jihadests and all the apocalyptic headlines that started to appear, I couldn't help but thinking that, it would be a perfect time for a new Planet of the Apes movie.
Unfortunately, Tim Burton took and ruined the concept that Planet of Apes originally had from the mind of such greats as Pierre Boulle and Rod Serling. The remake, although entertaining has no real point to it. Where the original really stands out as a real look at "Counting your Blessings".
I really think it ironic that the pessimistic character "Taylor" chooses to leave behind man's civilization because he didn't like what was becoming and spent the rest of his life trying to get back to it (or wishing he could), only to find out that he was right and they blew it to pieces. Very powerful flick. The remake should not have been remade. It lost the message, or warning, if you will.
[In a statement issued following the Albert Einstein's death, US President Dwight Eisenhower said: "No other man contributed so much to the vast expansion of the 20th century knowledge.
"Yet no other man was more modest in the possession of the power that is knowledge, more sure that power without wisdom is deadly.]
Unnerving as it is, it makes for great a Science Fiction storyline and may be the ground for a pop culture phoenomena.Last edited by hobub; Apr 9, '08, 10:34 AM.Comment
