I went to elementary school in NYC, 1st to 6th grade. My school did have 1/2 day Kindergarten too, but I went to a day care center that was Nursery school and Kindergarten. I went to 7th grade in NYC in an intermediate school (Jr. High) that was 6th-8th grade. Then I moved to CA. Here in Oakland, I went to Jr. High for 8th and 9th grade. About 15 years ago, Oakland Public Schools changed grade school from K-6th to K-5th. Now Jr. High here is from 6th-8th grade instead of 7th-9th grade.

With my Dad in the Air Force we moved around a lot so I went to many different schools. Grades 1 and 2 on base. Grade 3 and half of 4 here. Other half of 4, 5 and 6 on base. Grade 7, 8 and 9 in Junior High. High school was grades 10, 11 and 12.

We moved to my current city in south central Kansas when I was in the third grade in the early 1970s. I finished elementary school with fifth grade and then went to middle school from sixth to eighth grade. I remember missing the playground and the long recess that we had in elementary school. The classes were a lot harder and more homework was given. I then went to high school from ninth to twelfth grade. That was a big change for everything was harder.

The local elementary school now has preschool to fourth grade, the middle school is fifth to eighth grade, and the high school remains ninth to twelfth grade. All three schools have been rebuilt since I went to them.

When I went through school, kindergarten wasn't mandatory, but I went to a private kindergarten and then moved to public elementary school first through sixth. The three junior highs in my town were seventh-ninth. Ninth grade was considered our freshman year, but our high school campus housed only 10th through 12th.

Today in my state, kindergarten is mandatory and part of elementary school. There are still junior highs 7-9th, but also middle schools of 6-8th while others are just 7-8th. A real mixed bag.

K thru 5 was at the elementary school, Jr. high 6-8 was at the high school with 9-12. The town was only 1300 people.

Our district had Kindergarten at both of the grade schools, and the grade schools were for K-2 and the other one was k and grades 3-6... After that you went to the jr. High (7-8) which was in the upstairs of the high school... After that, you went downstairs for the rest of your school years...

Now that school district is different in that they have a dedicated jr. high and I think the k-2 school was sold and is now a private school...

                    9-12 High School

Elem and Middle were easy walks for me, the elem school was less than two blocks away and the middle school was only a bit further than that.

For HS it was trickier, my house was literally on the corner of the cut-off for getting the bus. I was on the wrong side

The walk would have taken about 30 minutes, but I don't really remember ever having to do it. For awhile I used a fake bus pass that I made with a friend. It was pretty convincing, which was impressive since this was the 80s and we had limited resources and no computer. The rest of the time I just got rides from friends' parents..

My elementary school ran K-6 when I went there, but we were the last class to go to 6th grade there. After that year, 6th grade was moved to the middle school, and it's remained that way since. The middle school runs 6-8, and then high school of course, 9-12.

K-8 for me, Highschool was very close and shared the cafeteria with the Grade School.

My kids have it different... All of these are different schools throughout the same town and I have kids at three of these right now.

Went to a private school growing up, but ours was set up as a K-8 building.

The local public schools were K-6 and 7-8. But, at some point when I was in high school, they shifted to K-2, 3-6, and 7-8. Now? It's K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. My understanding is that it was done to keep curriculum consistent across all schools in the city and make it easier to differentiate instruction on a larger scale.

My dad's school, which once stood where my house now is, oddly enough, went 1-12. Most of the kids went to 8th grade and that was it, and my dad was no exception. His parents pulled him out to work on the farm. He got his GED in the Army.

Hard to imagine sending Kindergarteners and Seniors together now.

Elementary was K-6, Junior High was 7 & 8, and High School was 9-12 in my town. The local Catholic school only went from K-8, so we got a bunch of new kids in public school our Freshman year.

It was a more of a traumatic switch going to high school, some counselor put me in several wrong classes and school officials were adamant and i could not correct my schedule. Freshman year was hell. I hated school for the most part and refused to go to my class reunions. Looking back, the most important life lessons were learned elsewhere....
