Question about your Elementary School

My Elementary School was grades K-8

Before I came to the Museum I thought that was pretty standard throughout the country.

After reading many posts over the years was surprised to learn how many Jr Highs there was/is out there.

What kinda Elementary School did you go to ?

If you did go to a Jr High was it kinda traumatic changing schools in 6/7th-ish grade and then again to high school ?

Up here in Ontario, Canada my schools in the late 70's/early 80's were Jr Kindergarten, Sr Kindergarten, Grade 1 to Grade 8.

My High School however had a wing for Grade 7 and 8 with their own Principle and teachers. They were called "Adam Scott Intermediate School" while us big kids from Grade 9 to 13 were in "Adam Scott Collegiate and Vocational Institute". We have since then gotten rid of Grade 13 in Ontario. I never did look into which elementary school in the area only went to Grade 6 to feed the High School 7 & 8 wing.

I did kindergarten to grade 5 at Prince Charles Public School, moved to a different city and again attended a Prince Charles PS, however this one only had K- to grade 5 so I was only at that school for 1 year, and everybody switches from that school after grade 5 to Sir Mackenzie Bowl which was grades 6,7,8. There was another school near by, Sir John A MacDonald, that was also just grades K to grade 6. So all of those kids went to SMB Public school for grades 7,and 8.
It was really weird because in grade 5 you were king of the hill (in kid logic) and the oldest in the whole school (although only in grade 5 so what's that 10 years old?). Then you transfer to new school and your on the very bottom again, then the. Ext year you get a whole bunch of new kids. And because you were already there for grade 6, the schools more "yours" than these new kids coming in (again kid logic). Then there's dynamics of who's the "popular" kids now? Haha it really was pretty strange when I think of it now

Edit: I also think it's a regional thing between saying "grade 5" and "5th grade"

I attended 1st & 2nd grades at the Elementary School at the northern end of the town that I grew up in. 3rd thru 5th grades were at the High School in the middle of town, until the school burnt down in January and I had to finish 5th grade at the Methodist Church. 6th thru 8th grade were at the Middle School at the southern end of town. Then back to a rebuilt High School for 9th thru 12th grades.
The town I grew up in was actually pretty small (population around 3,000), but was split nearly perfectly in half by a county line. From 1st thru 5th grades, kids from one county attended grade school at the Elementary building located in the northern part of town for Grades 1-3, and at the High School for grades 3-5 (one 3rd grade class was at each location). Kids who lived in the other county attended Grades 1-5 at another Elementary building in the southern part of town.
Up to that point, all kids would then attend 6th grade at the Elementary building at the southern end of town, and Jr High (7th & 8th) and High School (9th thru 12th) at the High School.
The year I reached 6th grade, though, the Middle School system was started, which grouped grades 6 thru 8 in one building, in what used to be the Elementary building at the southern end of town, and there was a graduation ceremony for students completing the 8th grade. All the elementary kids (1st thru 5th) then went to an expanded Elementary building at the northern end of town.
Before the Middle School system consolidated all the students from one grade under the same rooof, the county line created some odd situations, where kids who lived on one street attended school in a different building than those who lived on the street behind them!

My elementary school (K-8) was pretty cool

Mostly just farmers

We all basically watched out for each other.

Us 8th graders were all assigned a kindergarten kid to watch out for as a big brother/sister.

When I first started high school it was my first interaction with "town kids".

It's when I first grew up and found out many people are born *******s.

Pre-school to grade 8, same place. The HS was a couple towns away.

I went to catholic school so we had 1st through 8th. they later added kindergarten long after I graduated.
my kids are split, k through 2, then new school 3rd through 5th, then new school 6th through 8th, and finally high school. it was a bit annoying at first having them all in different schools but you get used to the different schedules

In Seattle proper it's Kindergarten through 5th grade for elementary school....6th - 8th are Middle School/Jr High...9th - 12th are High School. Some jurisdictions have K-8 schools.

I went to public school K-2nd grade, private school 3rd-6th grade, Jr high 7th-8th, one HS for 9th grade and another for 10-12. I lived in Seattle for the K-2 then moved away so I lost all my friends, made new ones in private school then lost those ones when I went to Jr High but didn't know many of those kids because they weren't in my private school neighborhood, then moved back to Seattle for 10th grade and skipped a grade because my parents lied to the Jr high. So when I moved back to Seattle I should have been in 9th grade with all my friends that were in my K-2 classes. Now I was a year ahead of them and had to explain why.

In my town when I grew up it was k-6 for elementary school, 7th and 8th grade for jr high and 9-12 for high school.

Now it's K-5 for elementary, 6-8 for "middle school", there is a 9th grade only high school campus and a 10-12 high school campus.

When I attended K-5th was elementary, 6th - 8th was middle school and 9th - 12th was high school.

Our current district structure is
Elementary - Young 5s through 4th
Middle school - 5th & 6th
Junior high - 7th & 8th
High school - 9th through 12th

In the province of British Columbia when I went to school my elementary school was (K-7) kindergarten to grade seven.
High school went from grade 8- 12. That was in 77 up until 90.

My school went:
1-3 at one school
4 at another
Then hey built a new school that was 1-6, and I went for 5-6.
Jr High was 7-9
High was 10-12

For me it was (separate schools):

K-6
7-8
9-13 (grade 13 optional, you needed it to go to university, and I think the difference between university and college is different in Canada compared to the US)

My kids are going to the same schools but for them it's now:

JK-3
4-8
9-12

From what I understand, in Canada you say "Grade X" and in the US "Xth Grade"
Oh, and in Canada we don't have the whole Freshman, Sophmore, Junior, Senior designations that the US has.
