American idiot definitely in the running. Radio heads kid a or ok computer are right there too.

Honestly, popularity and an the insane amount of outlets are keeping a lot of great music from reaching the audience. There's so much to listen to and choose from, a lot gets missed. Tegan and Sara had an amazing album a few years back and rill kileys last album rivals anything fleet wood mac ever did.

I think that you guys have a better feel for all of this than I do. I'm much more of a Beatles, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Neil Young, etc guy. So, I'm really out of touch with more recent music, for the most part.

In fact, early this evening I was "in concert" with Neil Young...lol

I was listening to U2's Joshua Tree the other day. That album IMHO is probably the last great Masterpiece album. Hell, the B-sides that didn't make the album are as good if not better than the songs on the album. Achtung was really good...but not quite the Masterpiece that was The Joshua Tree. Love Green Day...but I don't think it's in the same stratosphere as Joshua Tree is. Trust me...I had to put Joshua Tree away for the last 20 + years because it was SO HUGE. Soon as I came back to it it was like "DAMN! That's a great record." It's a shame that U2 has basically put out the same record the last 3 that have been put out by them. Think the new album is gonna really be bad. Dangermouse is the producer and it has been delayed for the last 2 years. I think the new single is going to hit the radio next week...but if it's anything like the Mandela song it's gonna be a bad record.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
          The beauty that surrounds them
          Isn't it a pity".

          - "Isn't It A Pity"

The last "masterpiece" album, if I am to use that word, would have to be Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." There have been other excellent albums released through the years, but none I would personally label a "masterpiece" that came out after that.

Man, that's a toughie! Of course, one's age and musical tastes would come into play, but for me a short list would include:

              Metallica "Master of Puppets"
Guns N' Roses "Appetite for Destruction"
              Queensryche "Operation Mindcrime"
              The Cure "Disintegration"
Faith No More "The Real Thing" and "Angel Dust"

I appreciate the importance of albums like "Nevermind", "Joshua Tree", "Achtung Baby" and "American Idiot", but I don't listen to those albums as much these days, while I still listen and very much enjoy the albums on my list above.

I don't know much about music anymore. I hear people say Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy from 2010

"Appetite For Destruction" is really the only complete album that's on my iPhone...everything else is snippets and singles... so there's that...

I think you guys are a little bit narrowly focusing on your personal tastes. Look, I'm not even nuts about some of these, but there's no denying that most people consider these albums to be masterpieces:

                    Radiohead - OK Computer
                    Arcade Fire - Funeral
                    OutKast - Aquemini
                    Frank Ocean - Channel Orange
                    Adel - 21
White Stripes - White Blood Cells
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Yeezus was phenomenally huge too)

That last Beyonce album and one of the Coldplay albums would probably be up there for most people too. I'm probably forgetting a bunch too.

I have 2 to add to my list that I still listen to at least once a week. Unlike Joshua Tree, these 2 were HUGE as far as airplay...but they are 2 of the most complete albums. By complete I mean there's not a bad track on the album: Tears For Fears' "The Seeds Of Love" and Crowded House's "Woodface". The latter of which has been a real ***** to find on vinyl at a decent price.

Id have to agree. This is their best album. 2112 and Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell are my all time favorite albums. Not a bad song on either one. Both are Perfect in my opinion. Two Masterpieces!!

I'm a huge Rush fan, but 2112 is too new...not Masterpiece as of yet. But he'll yeah, friggin awesome album.

But that one I'd personally pick is Range Against the Machine: Battle of Los Angeles, released in 1999, that's my pick.

And just before that, 1992's Queen's Innuendo and Nirvana's Nevermind (good pick, Mikey).
