Lost a great one today - Robin Williams!!! RIP

Very shocking and sad news. I've been watching him since Mork and Mindy when I was a kid. RIP.

It's going to be interesting to see how the late night shows are going to handle it. Letterman was a huge fan and friend of Robin's.

I think Letterman normally records his show at 4:30pm on Mondays, so the news probably didn't break until after tonight's show was finished taping. Unless he taped and added something after the fact, which is certainly possible, all things considering. But yeah, a lot of fellow comedians and actors are going to take this hard.

I almost fell outta my chair when I read this! Such a great talent, not only comedic, but dramatic as well. I will never forget watching him on Mork and Mindy, and bugging my mom for a pair of those rainbow suspenders. I'm so sad to think he couldn't use his talents to give himself a reason to laugh. On a side note, about ten years ago I found out he was really into the whole designer vinyl scene, and frequented both Kidrobot and Giant Robot in SF. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out he had some Megos on his shelves as well.

Man, they've already updated the IMDB page to "deceased"...

My favorites of his were Insomnia and One Hour Photo. I really liked his serious parts, they demonstrated that he was so much more than comedy. He could play evil and threatening just as well.
Again this shows us that a lot of the world's "funny men" are deeply serious (and often depressed) on the inside. Maybe they see the world for what it often is...

It's a great loss, I'll miss him...

While not one of his better films, I always liked "The Best of Times", a movie he did with Kurt Russell in '86. The plot revolved around Williams' character wanting to re-play a high school football game in which he dropped what would have been the winning touchdown.
He really got my attention with his role in "Dead Poet's Society" a couple of years later, and of course his Oscar-winning turn in "Good Will Hunting".
He also was so highly regarded by Johnny Carson that he was one of the last 2 guests (with Bette Midler) on the Tonight Show when Carson retired.

Wrote about it on my Facebook page, and figured I'd share it here:

Been thinking a lot about Robin Williams since I heard the news yesterday evening. I didn't know him. I never met him. I don't have any fascinating stories about running into him while shopping or dining. I saw him perform once, and it was out-of-this-world amazing. But, it was also a bit sobering to realize that I would never, in my life, be as good at ANYTHING as he was at standup. As funny as he was, I always appreciated his more serious roles better. Yeah, I love to laugh, but when he got in his "manic-funny" mode, I just couldn't relate to him. His mind moved so quickly from one reference to another, I couldn't keep up most times. Nobody has friends that are like that. Nobody.

Instead of his Mork, or the Genie, or Mrs. Doubtfire, or Adrian Cronauer, I thought about his roles in The Fisher King, Dead Poets Society, Insomnia, One Hour Photo, and, of course, his Oscar-winning role in Good Will Hunting. Those roles where he was so good in portraying a guy who is barely holding it together, but can still absolutely slay you with a perfectly-placed quip about Pudge or a wife who used to fart in her sleep. That guy. I know that guy like the back of my hand. I'm going to miss watching that guy bring such a well-defined humanity and unique nuances to every script he was given. I'm sorry he had so much pain. I just wish he'd listened a bit more to himself:
