Ode To Billy Joe was great .....
I remember seeing the movie in the theatre back in the day --- (don't tell your friends the ending) ...
The movie was a let down, but the song is still the best.

I'm not sure if this qualifies, but it's a cowboy song/lullaby and a classic in general. It's James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James." Here are 2 links to two very early performances of this song by James:

I'm a huge fan of country music. Hank Williams is one of my idols and arguably one of the finest 20th century American songwriters. Period. I'm a fan of 20's and 30's string bands and white blues singers that pre-date modern country music. Jimmie Rodgers is a giant. So are the Carter Family. But my favorite era is post-war, say, '46 to '65. Faron Young. Lefty Frizzel. Ray Price. Hank Thompson. All giants in my eyes. I also am extremely biased towards the west coast/Bakersfield side of things--Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Rose Maddox, Tommy Collins are all heroes of mine. Post '65 things start getting a bit shakey. I'm a big fan of the "outlaw" movement of the 70's--Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, David Allen Coe. All great stuff. Sadly, by 1980 country music started to become a shell of it's former self. Too much pop. Too much Urban Cowboy. "Real" country music survived (and survives to this day)--you just won't really hear it on country radio....

I'm not a big country fan but I have to say that the Dixie Chicks recent album was terrific all around. Taking the Long Way Home was a particularly very good single. I really like the Garth Brooks cover of KISS's Hard Luck Woman on the KISS tribute album, tho I have never heard his own songs. My friend had me over a few years back and asked me what would I like to listen to and I saw that Johnny Cash album Live from Folsum Prison,(?), and I said let's play that. I have to say I was never a Johnny Cash fan but that was a damn good album. I saw the bio-picture and thought that was pretty good and you get to sample a lot of Cash's music in it.
