    >This is a 2D interpretation of that

Yeah. It's not that different, simplified face (probably for the transition to line as opposed to digital skin based) and a lot more sparkly.

    >I'm not going to start a protest group over it

....but SOMEONE will. That's the downside of the internets; it makes it harder to ignore the concerned citizen types.

    >It does look like a concentrated effort to keep the characters relevant

And streamline the designs so's to better conform to the current standards. It makes animation (especially CGI) or toy production a LOT easier when you work off standardized templates. When you look at the Disney Princesses, you're combining characters from seventy years of cartoons. It takes some juggling to make them look similar enough that the older ones don't look like extraterrestrial invaders from a dimension where physics works differently.

actually the one they had there last year when we went was rather easy on the eyes, other than the really big wig they have to wear

Yeah, it is always a little disappointing to see the lack of understanding and empathy on these type of cultural issues by those not affected by it. I can see the point that is sort of a mixed message to be sending girls that one of the few Disney heroines that is not defined by her appearance has to be changed to be what is considered more conventionally attractive.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

So... let me get this straight... they gave her a sparkly dress, gave her a bath and made her put her bow away when she meets and greets kids in the park?

                  Not seeing the problem.

You know, Megara in Disney's Hercules was pretty much a hooker.

it's not like she is a beloved and iconic character that has been around for 75 years and the powers that be suddenly changed her iconic costume and eliminated the red trunks or something.

I have 5 nieces, and I think this stinks. In the movie that character hated that outfit, and didn't think wearing it felt true to who she was. I thought it was an important detail in the movie that addresses a very real issue little girls face - not that I want to get all preachy about it here.

It also doesn't surprise me too much, Disney's too classless to sell anything but vapid beauty.

I just don't see that big of a difference between the before and after....I could see if it was a fat or ugly girl and then they changed her..but she was already cute..will girls even really notice the difference ??

Just because something hasn't been around for 75 years doesnt mean it's not equally loved. I personally don't see the big deal. I wasn't bothered by the red trunks changed either, but I'm not passionate about these character.
