Not sure if it was sold for one day or not (that sounds more like an urban legend). But it was pulled and repasted rather quickly, that much is true. That cover is considered the holy grail of Beatles album covers. I've only ever seen it once in person and it was going for over $500 at the time (that was around 1982).
The story is far more fascinating than the actual picture. It was the Beatles way of sending a message to Capital Records about chopping up their albums to make additional albums - mainly Rubber Soul and Revolver which bore little resemblance to thier original UK counterparts. Capitol butchered those two albums to make "Yesterday and Today" and added an extra track or two.
